Hot Diggity Sog - Chapter 5: The Big One

You could orca/poly some of the open sections to seal some heat in. Help the heat rise that 10 degrees. You could throw the panels on the base pointing upward to light lower branches.

I was just going through a similar situation. You might enjoy this, sure it’s nothing you haven’t been over before.

I ended up adding a heater - it's one of those radiator looking ones that heats up oil on the inside. I can run it on Low, Medium or High. High is 1200 Watts. Medium is 600 Watts. I did 24 hours at 1200 Watts and now I keep it on Medium 24/7. I put my exhaust fan/carbon filter on a timer. 15 minutes on, 45 minutes off. Temps now peak at 75 degrees when lights are on and bottom out at 68 when lights are off. Pretty sweet considering my basement temps are now 57 degrees.

Day 121
Flowering - Day 42

Last day of Week #6 in the books.

So...did a very thorough cleaning of both reservoirs and I was very careful in measuring exactly how much water the two totes hold at my target depth. And holy shit, I found my feeding problem. The last time I measured the water quantity was probably 7 or 8 weeks ago. At that time, it was 20 gallons on the dot - 10 gallons in each tote. What was it yesterday? 10 gallons. The roots have so much mass that the quantity of water to fill the two totes at my target depth has been cut in half! What a rookie mistake to not anticipate this. So...I've basically been feeding at exactly 2x across the board.

After the thorough cleaning, I added the 10 gallons of RO water. PPM's were at 60. Residuals, I guess.
I then added 20 ml's of CalMag and waited - total PPM's up to 260 (7 scale)...right where I expected. I had been adding twice this...ugh.
I then went and added my custom amounts of the other stuff and we came out at 490 PPM or 0.7 EC. She promptly ate up 100 PPM's of food within 12 hours and now my top-off's are holding her in the high 300's (370 to 390) ~ 0.54 EC.

I consider her to be in detox right now and will hold the course until the incredible darkness in the leaves starts to diminish. The one thing that sucks is that I had the dark leaves in Chapter 1 and never really thought too much of it. I had always thought if you were over-feeding, you're going to get the burnt tips. I don't have any burnt tips.

Oh well, live and learn.

We're still probably 5 weeks out but damn - the resin is looking proper!

Found some more problems this evening...ugh.
Canopy temps have been substantially higher than ambient room temps despite having lots of air movement. The top 20% of the plant is experiencing heat stress. I misdiagnosed this with over-feeding.

Here is what I did and what the plan moving forward is:
  • I removed the 600W HPS on top and put in a 315W CMH
  • I'm only going to run my heater during the lights-off cycle
  • Going to order a 3rd oscillating fan
The grow room temps are going to drop which is going to cause the RH to rise so I'm putting my basement dehumidifier on a timer to only run during the light-off cycle.
Regarding the nutrient overload, I'll just continue to hold the course - 0.6 EC with CalMag accounting for roughly 50% of that.

I'm also beginning my last round of defoliation and will spread it out over the next 4 or 5 days. I will be fairly heavy handed.

Glad you were able to figure out what's going on Hot. I'm sure you will have her back on track in no time! I still think she's beautiful & never mind a weed, She's a BBB! (Big Beautiful Bush)

When you have a moment,
out of curiosity & to possibly learn something. What are the temps & Rh of your canopy as opposed to your ambient temp & Rh?

Thanks in advance for answering my question.
Have a great day!

With the 315W CMH on top, canopy top is 7 degrees higher than ambient. With the 600, it was more like 10. The top row of LED's are obviously contributing to this as well.

As of right now, canopy temp is 77 and ambient is 70 - perfect. I had been keeping the ambient temps around 75 and peaking at 77 without realizing the canopy temps would be that much higher.

As far as RH, I'm trying to follow the VPD charts but I'm too scared to let the RH get up into the 60's. If she wasn't as dense as she is, I would consider it but I'm just not brave enough to try. That said, I keep RH between 45 and 55%. Canopy RH seems to be about 5% less than ambient but I need more time to monitor to be sure. I may be able to let ambient RH rise higher than I currently am.

Quick update - Canopy temp is plus 7 degrees and minus 9% RH.

I def need to bring my ambient RH up.

Slowly working thru and solving the issues that I've had. I've got the feeding regiment back on schedule after a 5 day detox period. Fresh rez change today.
I also have the room temp and canopy temps under control now. I'm increasing my ambient room RH 10 points.
Ambient temps: 70 F
Ambient RH: Between 55% and 65% depending on temps.
Canopy temps: 75 F
RH at the Canopy tends to be around 10 points less. This is subject to change as I monitor things.

315W CMH up on top and that will probably remain for the rest of the grow. I kind of wanted to see how a CMH performs anyway.

Just curious... Are those purple stems strain or PH issues?
Good question. I now think it is the strain. It first showed up in Veg when I got a minor russet mite problem. It showed up again during flower when the weather changed and got really cold - it took me a few days to bring on a heater and get my temps dialed in.

My PH levels no longer seem to hold steady and I have to adjust frequently but am I managing them well. 5.8 and 6.2 is the range I allow it to float.

At the end of the day, I guess I'm not positive what the cause is.
