Home Security

First off, how can there not be a thread about this already???

Okay does anyone run video surveillance at the place that they grow? If so do you have certain places that you like to cover? How many cameras do you run, through PC or CCTV?

I am planning to install about 4 cameras at my place so I can keep an eye on things, when I'm home and when I'm not home. If anyone would like to offer any tips or advice feel free.

I may post my progress if anyone is interested. I haven't purchased anything yet but I will do a fair bit of research before I do. Cheap, simple and reliable will be the goal.

GrowTech

stays relevant.
if you really want to do it right, do 2 in back yard, 2 in front yard, 1 in hallway leading to grow op, and one inside the grow op watching the door.

run it to a PC you can keep in a media closet, and set it to text you when there is movement inside the room on the door area. (most software let you select a grid area to watch for motion activity, so you can set motion to watch the door and not trip when it sees your light mover going

you can set it to send you an email, most cell providers allow recieving text msgs via a format like [email protected] -- the dogs in the back might be a problem for tripping off sensors... I would keep a camera back there and set the alert policy to send text when something moves over your fence... (highlight the area over the fence, and tell it to record from that point).

most important parts to record are your hall leading to the grow op, so you can catch a clean image of the face, and inside the grow facing the door, so you can get footage of them, and whatnot...

the video up in the front I would set to record PICTURES (maybe 1 high res jpeg every 5-10 seconds) IF the interior alarms are tripped (in case the burglars car is out front)

I'd also look into some higher quality web cams if you have a reliable wireless connection.....you could set your web camera to be viewed online, from any pc that has internet access.

Looking at the other side of the spectrum. Wouldn't camera's bring up more suspiscion with neighbours and people driving by?? I live in Canada and I would notice if someone had cameras on their property unless they were hidden very well. Also in the unfortunate case you do get busted arn't those tapes/recordings cold hard evidence to convict you??

Just thought i would put in my 2 cents cause I do not udnerstand the need for camera's unless you live in a bad area/ live a pretty sketchy lifestyle.

Well first off, if you get broken into it's not like you can call the cops eh? Second your not going to see cameras inside someones house unless your in there and it seems home security is becoming more affordable therefore more popular.

If you saw cameras on someones property you could guess they are protecting something of value but would that be incentive to break in? Surprise, your on camera! I dont think I would record everything and keep it on file, I'd like to have motion detect cameras so I can quickly view the days happenings and delete.

I would also like to be able to see whos coming to the front door if I'm busy in my grow room, or be able to check up on things while I'm not home.

I know a few people with camera systems that don't do anything illegal.

I can see where you come from but still am not convinced. Its like you said if you get broken into its not like you can go to the cops so why have the camera's?? If you have a grow op im sure the people ripping you will also know you wont go to the police and so the camera's would not stop anything.

Also i have a huge peep hole in my door that has four locks on it. I too can see who is at my door, just not while im in my grow room but why do you need to??

People who are not doing things illegal could have camera's cause they actually can take it to the police if something were to happen.

I believe that your lifestyle/ appearence would be more of a security risk than people breaking into your house and stealing your crop.

I work on being the "average" guy . Short hair, no peircings, blank shirts, nothing to make me look like a skateboarder/ snowboarder or anything in that realm because profiling is a bigger issue than cameras in my opinion. Having cameras throughout the outside and inside of your house is not what the "average" person does. If you are safe and secure there should be no need camera's that to me are still a reasonable suspision when it comes to cops and a way of outting yourself to everyone.

Thanks

You're right in a sense that flying under the radar is probably the best way to be, but I would still prefer to see who it was and what "they" did. If nobody knows about the grow op, then they wont break in specifically for that, so if they see cameras everywhere they have to assume you can take it to the cops.

I cant even hear someone knock at the front door when I'm in my grow room, so the camera would tell weather I want to answer it or not.

Anyway this thread is about having cameras for home security, if you want to start your own thread about something else you're more than welcome....:roll:

Im sorry ....... i thought this thread says "home security" as the name ......i didn't see "cameras for home security". Didn't mean to offend ya mate!bongsmilie Anyway i am just showing it from another point of view. Their is more to camera security than just the camera/set-up it self ;you must be smart about it and look at it at every angle.

I would start a thread titled " Security Camera Set-up" as that is all you are talking about...... feel free to.. it could be interesting :roll:

so trying to bring this thread back. Does anyone know how much it would cost roughly to set up camera's like lostinspace was talking about???? also if someone is not great with computers could they still be able to set/ use and maintain this kind of home security from your laptop?? And also can you do this so that no one AT ALL knows you have the camera's at your place?

i live in apartments and i had cameras up just for the shit of it before i ever started growing and yes...it does attract attention from ur neighbors specially if ur in an apartment people bitched about them...saying that they invaded their privacy. so my apartment complex made me take them down...they never came down here or in my apartment...granted i have no grow op at this point in time. but still people always say that cameras attract unwanted attention because of the fact that they always see them and say...why do they need those? specially when u live in an area like i do lol.

id actually either buy some of those descreet cameras that are easy to hide....or i DIY a camera i bought...make something to enclose them and hide them....seems like that would b safer
