Wise words there Dankie. One didn't have to grow up in the South to experience racism either. It was very prevalent here on the West Coast as well. I remember grown Black men calling me "sir" when I was around seven years old. They were unable to own homes because the banks wouldn't lend to them. They were treated as second class citizens and the real shame was ... they bought into it hook, line and sinker.

It's interesting to differ in the types of racism-Northern and Southern...because I really think there is. I mean, the best way I can put it is that in the North there is a sort of hateful mistrust towards minorities, where as in the South, racism isn't really an outwardly hateful thing, it's more of a "cultural understanding" based on ignorance.
See, in Pittsburgh, racism exists, but it doesn't really get noticed with the people-Pittsburgh is one of those towns where if you're Italian, you live here, German you live there, etc, and no one really gives anybody any problems, unless they are wearing a badge. Then they will just fuck with you mercilessly. My point about Pittsburgh is that perhaps an Italian guy WOULDN'T hire a black person, but that same Italian guy wouldn't hire an Irishman or Frenchman either.
I guess that's why people from there call it Pennsyltucky- it's a unique mix of Northern and Southern racism.

Here in the great state of Nevada, where I went to school, there were no blacks in my school untill the 9th grade when one black family moved to Hendertucky, (Henderson), We never even heard of racism, it was not an issue. But those poor black kids sure got some funny looks. A boy and a girl like 13-14 in high school. I never even had to deal with racism untill I went into the Army. There was a very racist theme happening in Vegas at the time, but living in Henderson, we didn't get involved. I just knew that the blacks weren't allowed out front in the casinos and they pretty much lived on the west side of the tracks. Rumor had it that if a white kid went into that part of town after dark, they didn't return. After High school, I went with a friend to the west side, scared shitless, to play in a poker game with the blacks, he was friends with them. I noticed they were smoking those funny cigarettes and my friend wanted me to try one, but I didn't smoke at the time so I just drank wine. It wasn't untill I arrived in Amsterdam a couple of years later that I figured out what marijuana was all about, my best friend wanted to go into a Hash Den, but I said no, I'd just drink, it was a few years later when I took up the evil weed, 1964-65 I believe. BTW I remember an article in the paper about that time that said the cops busted a vacant lot on the west side with 15ft tall MJ plants. The lady that lived next door said the teernagers had been planting that lot for years, and cutting them down in the fall. She let them use her water as she thought the plants were beautiful. No humans were harmed in that article.

I'm sorry, I'm just not sure what you meant. Are you remarking that certain people in any culture, regardless of race,are just assholes, and that most assholes don't have enough personality on their own, so therefore they take upon the role of, and therefore propagate the notion of, racial stereotypes?
Because if that's what you meant, well then yeah. That is the solution. We need to notice that someone is an Asshole, not a White/Black/Hispanic/Chinese/Etc Asshole. See, assholes are assholes because they are dumb asses, but not all assholes are dumb; we all have an asshole. It takes me back to my college days in Logic 101, but keep in mind I've been stoned a long time.
We all have racists thoughts. It's just that when you consider that there are more than two or three races, everybody is skeeved out by somebody else, and any culture in a geographic area is going to have a hierarchy of the "IgotHereFirsts". Black/White/Yellow/Whatever, people want neighbors that look like them. If there were no Black people in America, I assure you, WASPs would find someone else to be intimidated by. Probably the Mexicans. Those guys seem pretty tough, and they are if anything, determined.
There ya go, I mentioned another race outside the realm of Anthropology, so I guess I'm a racist. Hang me high, y'all!
But Knowm, if that's not what you meant, sorry. I probably made an ass out of myself, but God, I love the fact that I can say whatever I want in a public forum and not get into any real shit for it. Especially since I'm a loud mouthed stoner...I'm crazy enough to think that people need to just get over it and move on. Too often people fighting racism become racist themselves and miss the point that not everybody is out to get them, or cares enough to bother. The only real color worth consideration in a Capitalist society is Green. Can you make me money, or will you cost me?
