ok so i want to make a veg closet....
this thing is small...like 22" by 23" and 5 feet tall....
i want to veg 6 clones in the space....even if i can't do the whole veg in it...i could do some of it...
they don't need to get huge...
heat is going to be an issue...
ether side of the closet is wood and i can cut some holes into it for air exchange
oh yeah...needs to be hydro..as once they are vegged they are going in my ebb and grow...
do the homemade totes you see on ebay work well?
i can post pics of the closet if you want to see it...

this is what i was thinking....

turn 2 10 gallon totes into a ebb and flow ...cut the top one in half...fill with hydroton and 6 clones in RW..the bottom tote would be the res...

i really have no ideas on lighting and air...

what do you think RIU

you think a 125w cfl would work ok...
you know something like this http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-FLCDG125D-125-Watt-Compact-Fluorescent/dp/B001UV6P9I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326567240&sr=8-1

i used to use one of those 125 watt bulbs, there good if your planning on growing to no more than 12 inchs! any higher and they start to stretch badly! i also done 6 plants under it, they give off hardly any heat though, if you need to go higher than 12 inches add a couple 30 actual watt cfl to it.

thanks..i want to get about 18" before moving them to bloom ....would you put the extra 30 watters on the sides? or above?

i was also thinking about one of these http://www.amazon.com/LED-Wholesalers-GYO2002-Hydroponic-Reflector/dp/B003810CVA/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1326596243&sr=8-8
...but then i will need to up the air exchange...

i used to grow mine to 18 inches aswell, i had to add 2 x 30 watt bulbs, i just had them above the plants but i always put them into the flower room and switched the lights back to 18/6 for a week! atleast youve saved around 4 weeks of veg time still. you could always keep adding more 30 watt bulbs if needed.

p.s i took my clones when there was around the 4 n half weeks left in the flower room, this allowed for about 8-10 days for them to root and 3 weeksish for them to grow to roughly 18 inches.

thatd be good but heat will be a problem without good ventilation. i veg with a 4 foot 4 bulb t5 system with deep water and coral bulbs they grow great got loads of pics in my sig

A 125w will be fine - All I've ever used for my grows is a 125W CFL & I've had them taller than 18" .. I also use a 400W HPS for flowering although you could use the red spectrum CFL's for flowering instead if heat is an issue for you

did you not find they start to stretch badly though after about 12 inches? how many did you have under it? i had 6 and once you get upto the bigger pots you carnt fit them all under the light, thats when they stretch.

No not really I've never had a problem with stretching to be honest - I've always kept my light hood about 2-3" from the tops of the plants & never usually have more than 2 plants under there at one time, stretching usually occurs when the light is too far away from the plant or you have the wrong intensity of light

I use an 4' 8 tube t5 fixture in a closet like yours, with a 6" muffin fan pulling air thru. no stretching or heat problems. the sunblasters work great for extra light where you want as well.

Cheap and easy, I run a 2 wide X 3 deep X 3 ft. tall veg unit with 3 (el cheapo) std. 55 watt CFLs mounted vert. to a custom made adj. hood powering 8 AK-47 X Misty plants. Kept just 6" above the tops, it's plenty bright to keep 'em growing quick n' thick. After 2 wks I fire up 2 additional 150 watt HPS mounted between the CFLs to really pump the lumens, and pre stage or adapt them to the HPS spectrum and intensity before moving them into a 1000 watt HPS bloom unit in another 2 wks. A single 12 v PC fan venting out the top keeps the veg unit cool enough even with all the lights going. I converted 2 16" X 22" X 7" deep Rubermaid clear tubs w/ 3" dia holes cut in the lids and disposable plastic 8 oz cups punched w/an icepick (40-50 holes ea.) that are filled with plain washed gravel. The roots drop out thru the holes and fill the bottom of the tubs, and the plants love it. Some have argued that using clear plastic root tubs allows too much light on the roots. But I painted the lids, and the canopy of leaves keeps the light from being a real problem. And the bonus of keeping the roots in sight doesn't hurt either. Clear vinyl tubing feeds and overflows the root tubs (F&D) from the 25 gal. reservoir below.

I should emphasize the HPS adaptation thing. Unless you're going to bloom 'em out with CFLs alone, there is a conversion time frame for the plants to fully adjust to the HPS spectrum and sun-like intensity. My experience is final yields are less overall if one goes straight from CFL vegging to HPS blooming, as the plants require at least 10 days to respond to the HPS. 10-14 days of transitional development cuts into the end results, particularly when running a perpetual rotating system with tight time frames. Finished yields are larger per plant over the 8 wk bloom period when they've already been growing under HPS light for at least 2 wks in the vegging stage.

On the top shelf is where I veg, I use a rainforest that I converted to aeroponic it has six three inch sites. I leave them in there till they get a good set of roots then move them to waterfarms.
muffin fans are like large computer fans, cheap and they move lots of air.
The t5's are 54w 6500k, worth looking into

I vent the veg room into the bud room which has a large blower pulling air thru a charcoal filter and exhausts into my house, I dont like to vent outside and figure may as well use the heat to warm the house.
Spend some time thinking and panning it out, have you thought about what medium you will be using to grow in, or nutrients?

yea for heat, go with a CFL, and a small fan, you dont need much room for clones, i got a space of about 3ftx2ft and i have about 40 clones in there, no spacing at all, then a separate grow/veg area, then a flower room.

yes...im going to make a ebb and flow using 2 smaller rubbermaid totes i'm going to cut half off the top tote..and put 6 cheap trash cans from the dollar store...filled with hydroton..i use dyna-gro nutes..
