I think alot would depend on the size of the closet and the average temp of the closet if its cold enough then sure some people run 4 and 600s and still have a hard time keeping there plants warm enough because its so cold ....

cold is definitely what u want if you are not getting a vented hood that's for sure. My honest opinion is don't do it man, get a vented hood, That light makes a lot of heat real fast.

Didn't see the with the door open part, you might pull it off if you could get the fan blowing out the door but a vented hood is still much easier

Go with the 6 and make adjustments. It really does depend on the size and location of the closet and all. If your closet is big enough a 6 is fine. Gonna need to circulate the air so a fan is needed anyhow......

I use herbies seed bank mostly google them you'll get alot of help choosing a seedbank in the seed and strain threads ..
as gor which closet I don't know how cold is too cold with an 600 hps I only have experience with the 400 in a closet that is 6x2x6 and it would get upward of 100 degrees if I didn't exhaust into the attic ... Your ganna have a big problem with smell if you don't exhaust it somewhere with a carbon filter attached . If smell isn't a concern than try to get an average temp of both closets and measurements of both (lxwxh) and post them up like I said I don't have any experience with not exhausting the light because heat is always my enemy but I'm sure there are people here who do have experience with it .. Also what kind of reflector do you have on your light .. An open wing ,hood, cooltube?
I would imagine cutting a hole in your door would cause you problems with light leaks into the room during flowering

one of my first setups was a 600 and a 400 in a 2.5 x 8ft closet, that had double doors. I had no exhaust fan and I used a big patton fan on the ground in front of the closet, pointing upward in between the two lights. it blew the plants around alot and sort of forced the hot air to blow back out the top. less than ideal, I had to leave the doors open all the time when the lights were on which meant keeping the outer bedroom dark or being there to shut the doors when lights went out. I also had have all the windows in that bedroom open behind the blackout i had over them (blankets and sheets back then) and the room was constantly hot and uncomfortable. it worked. the 600 gets much hotter than a 400. I couldn't tell you what the temps ran but it was hot, though it did work.

I suggest you invest in a brand name filter if your freedom depends on odor control.*
Get some regular room deodorizers too, for when you need to open the tent/closet.

*I had a cheap-ass apollo filter that didn't do shit, but I upgraded to a phresh this time. It saved my ass. I live in my own house, in a nice neighborhood, so odor control was secondary, didn't have anything the first couple of grows.(stupid stupid stupid)
Something happened that I never expected, utility company needed access to the basement. I've owned houses for the past 20+ years and that has NEVER happened before. Knocked on the door at 1:30am. You might fend off the cable guy but the gas company is not so easy, especially when they have an emergency.
If I would have had the apollo, I'd have had to trash this grow and never grow here again.

They most certainly would have smelled it w/o a good filter, even though I hadn't flipped the lights yet. Now, I don't know if they would have ratted me out but I don't have to worry about it because I had a good filter.
You're in an apartment, not a single family home buried in suburbia. Much greater risk of the unexpected.

tl;dr: Invest in a quality carbon filter, they are worth every penny.

G/L with the grow!
