Hexagonal 'honeycomb' SCROG - drop ya knowledge!

I love growing SCROG style, as it allows for mega yields from a small space, and is very efficient at getting the most out of your lighting.

Every SCROG screen I have seen without exception has a standard grid layout.

I was thinking, would the spacing of the screen be more efficient if the grid was made of hexagons rather than squares?

It seems to me that this 'staggered' style screen should present a move even spread of tops, allowing for slightly better light penetration into the canopy.

Each top in a hexagon would be equidistant from the top in each connecting hexagon.

In a square style setup, a top in a square will be closer to the tops in the squares in the north/east/south/west directions. The tops in squares connecting in a diagonal direction (northeast/southeast/southwest/nothwest) will be further from this central top.

Therefore the hexagonal SCROG screen would have a more evenly spaced canopy, thus better light penetration.

Of course, around the very edge of the hexagonal screen you would loose half the number of available top positions, as every other potential top position would be a half hexagon, and too small to use. However, this could work out quite well, as in my experience the main stem tops always end up on the outside of the grid, and as they tend to be the biggest tops with the thickest stems, a little extra room could actually be beneficial.

What do you guys think? All input and opinions welcome!

Over thinking it; the shape of the squares means little. The size means more, but that's easily solved. Plus, hexagonal grids tend to stretch which would throw off the flat plane the grower is trying to achieve. Finally, hex grids are more expensive. For no gain? I'm thinking 'pass', although I'll give you points for creative thinking!

Thanks for the reply ttys, I did realise it would be of minimal benefit (if at all!), but any slight improvement on efficiency is a plus, right? How come the hexagonal grid will stretch? I would have thought so long as it was securely attached to the entirety of the outside of the frame, all would be good. As for it being more expensive, the cost of either is so little its pretty much a non issue.

I agree SCROG hole size is one of the most important factors. What size do you prefer for your SCROG nets? I'm running 50mm at the minute.
