hey folks! i'm new to growing and would love some experienced help! i have decided to build a grow room in my attic...the dimensions are 5 x 8 x 4 and the attic has ventilation and electricity. i would love to divide the room into veg & flower, but don't know what would be the best way to do so. i hoping to grow 5-8 plants and thinking about getting a 400w HPS and some fluorescents.

come on guys! help me plan this thing! i'll start a grow journal with building/growing progress and pictures. thanks for the advice!!:D

A few questions you have to ask yourself:

How much do you have to spend?
How many plants do you wanna grow?
Is it ok' with the other members of the house to grow?
Do want to grow Hydroponic or with dirt?

Before you buy anything. Do alot of research on what your planning on doing. I found Jorge Cervantes Ultimate Grow DVD to be very helpful.

well, considering it is my attic and my wife will help me grow...i should be in the clear. i want to grow 5-8 in soil on a $500 budget. what do you think, is it doable?

Heres what I suggest for a light, you want the Lumitek switchable ballast, a MH bulb, a HPS bulb (you can wait a little while on HPS)6in model.
HydroFarm ValuBrite 400 watt HPS Grow Light

This is the most bang for the buck, don't mess with cheap ballasts you'll be sorry.

I worried about heat up there, are you going to insulate it??

High Tech Garden Supply

That 400 MH/HPS set-up looks like a good deal. Have you checked your temps yet? Attics get pretty hot. I would expect that you will need to insulate that space and provide cool air (maybe A/C?) . Also that louvered vent would leak light badly and will need some kind of light trap, I would however use it as either intake or exhaust air vent. Do you have electricity in the attic? How many amps ? Good luck and keep us posted.

In order to grow in an attic space you need to insultate it like you would any other 'living space'. Put in framing with styrofaom on the out side and batt insiltaion in the new knee walls and across the new small attic space you will create above the growing space. Put panda plastic, white side in on your new outside wall and make sure the remaining attic has good ventilation. As jimmy mentioned you may need a little extra heat there during the cold months and ac during the warm months. You could get a decent start for around $500. at least $1000.00 by the time its done imo.VV
