Growing Auto's in the ground

Has anyone done it? It seems most are done in pots, or indoors. I want to mix one or two in with my garden. I had a plant last year, but it got way to big. I wanted about a 3ft plant and it turned out to be about 6 by 6. Great yield, but don't want a big one again. I'd like a smaller plant that will be done in a short amount of time. Has anyone grown in the ground? If so, what was the result? Thanks
