GreenX How to's... How to Clone in Soil (w/pics)

Holy shit I didnt know it was possible to clone in soil. I'll be taking clones and I'll use this method as well. +rep
 
Should the soil always be wet? Do you use standing water for the first few days. Can you use clonex solution?

The soil should remain moist, it's good to let it dry out a little bit - Root development requires water and AIR in the soil pores, if their is water in the soil pores, there can't be air! So an even balance is your goal. Don't water log the soil (or the stems will rot) but don't let the soil completely dry out either (clones will wilt and likely die or impair rooting time).

I use water straight from tap, not sure if this is good or bad. Doesn't seem to really matter for me, but may depending on the water quality in your area.

Clonex and any other rooting hormones are encourages to improve success rate and speed of root development.

Note: Although tops can be successfully cloned, they are the hardest part of the plant to get to root. The lower on the plant you take your cuts from the more 'rooting' hormones they will have and therefore they will be a lot easier and faster to root than cuts taken from high on the plant - Which are focusing their hormones on growth (vegetative production / flowering - if you're taking clones from a plant early in flower).

I have a high times DVD which says to use an inch of standing water in the tray for a week and change it daily. But they add an oxygen supplement to the water. I have 5 clones in pots in an inch of standing water. Should I take them out and just saturate them when they need it? What PH again?

If the high times DVD says it's ok, then give it a try, if it works, geat! If not, maybe try something different :P ... The pH I use is around 7 (because that's what comes out of the tap) I believe the optimum pH is 5-6
 
I had to bump this one. I am now in the process of cloning and I am reading up before I do it. I have a Domina Star that is bushy and ready for clones to be taken. just figuring out how to do it right. THIS SITE REALLY RAWKS!!
 
awesome guide was wondering if you could clone with out using a bubble cloner, might have to try this out shortly but 1st get some root hormone. might try out the guide on building a bubble cloner for fun though as well.
 
FYI to the high:

I've been using this method (day 6) and for me the key was keeping a humidity dome over them since I have an outtake fan up near my lights.
Problem I ran into was the soil getting moldy so I took it off for a few hours only to come back a few hours later horrified by massive drooping on all fronts!
I put the domes (1/2 Gal. coke bottles) back on and was very relieved to see them recover so well. However...more mold. :(
So I scraped away the mold and laid 2 chopsticks by each clone with the plant at the center of a raised X. I put plastic wrap around the opening of the domes, cut a slit in the wrap, then laid each one over the plants and onto the raised X. Problem solved. :)

I keep the domes as humid as possible making sure there are no droplets on the actual plant itself.
This seems to really keep them going strong. The strongest one has visible growth in the leaves and there is only 1 of 4 that is questionable.

i want to just say thank you i'm a new grower and i'm about to grow my first plant but how tall does the mother plant suppost to be when you cut it? i was thinking pretty tall

Wait til they are like 14 inches tall or more if its going to be a mother plant and your not going to flower it, otherwise 12" shout work
 
Wow, and all this time I thought I had to go through the trouble of getting a hydroponic system. Perhaps the people running the major grow videos came to a sort of agreement with the companies selling hydroponic systems/accessories (just a theory :P.) If soil seriously does the job then why should I waste hundreds even thousands on these grow systems?

Also, when should the clones be given nutes??
 
it is super easy to clone into soil, it just takes a lot longer than using a cloner...I will clone straight into soil if I accidentally take a clone...as in if I break one while bending it or something...then I will stick the broken piece in a cup of soil, and then I put the whole shebang a bang into a zip bag and leave it on the floor of the tent for a week, then I take the bag off, and the rest is history...

I use wet soil in my cup, and don't actually water the clone until it has roots and gets dry...with a humidity dome, or ziploc bag, or clear cup over the area it can't dry out, and overwatering kills more clones than poor taking of the clones...you can mess one up and it will still take as long as you make it fight to live...so don't water it til it is a plant.. just use wet soil...don't let the soil dry though, and oyu accomplish this feat with a dome or clear cover of some sort...I am using cut off bottle ends right now...when I plant a tiny seed in a big pot I just wet all the soil or coco first, then put in the seed, and then I push a bottle end over the place where the seed is...I just find that this way my seed doesn't dry out, so I can't overwater it...and it keeps anything from hurting them when they first sprout...anyway same idea...use wet soil and a dome so you don't have to water

Well you can clone straight into soil, you can clone using a paper towel with success for christsakes, or just a cup of water can clone a plant...but I know this and have used every method...some are harder than others...with soil I have around a 90% success rate, but it takes like 2 weeks...when I am taking clones on purpose I take out my DIY cloner that i made for around $30 including the pump necessary...anyway I take it out and clean it up add water and plug it in, stick in my clones and in 4 days to a week I have new plants in the soil starting to grow...or I can clone into soil which usually takes freaking 2 weeks sitting at the bottom of the tent before it starts to even appear alive..lol. Just like suspended...anyway cloners are faster, and so insanely easy to make, as long as you have a drill..
