Green Algae On Top Of Res (pic)

This morning I found this green algae growing on top of my res;

I was late for work so I didn't have more than a few minutes to inspect my res and roots but I saw no signs of algae. I did notice that my plants didn't seem as perky but that might have just been in my head.

Would algae grow on top of the res but not in it due to all the light it would receive on top? The interior of my res is edfectively blocked from light. Is there any preventative measures I can take right now?

bleach is what I tend to go to..search but it seems like 1-3 ml per gallon is safe for the gurls. I drop a shot glass in 50 gsallons

That's a problem with white plastic. If it's not in your res you have a leak. Find it and fix it. But clean it with a 10% bleach mix. Green is better then black.

My advice to you is to not even WORRY about a little algae. It won't hurt anything.....Wait until you are done with your cycle and then clean it. I wouldn't make any special efforts or risk shocking your plants with a cleaning effort. I promise you: A little Algae isn't going to hurt anything.

Are you for real??? Algae and mold grow in the same areas. If you let algae grow on your res you are letting mold grow as well. One of the few times it's ok is on RW but you still don't want it. Algae feeds off the same as your plants do. So your plants don't get all of what they need.

I agree. Algae is never okay.

Bleach water mixed 1:10 will kill it. Anything the res supports too if you get it in there. Use cloths to dab and wipe.
