thanks in advance for help. but i am looking into getting a generator. for those of you who currently run generators i have a question or 2. first, how much gas does it take to run a gene. 24 hr. a day? seems like a whole lot, is it really worth switching off the electricity for your room.? and second, where so you guys stash it at? i mean do u mount it in the attic bolted on vibration pads with a full exhaust going out or do u leave it outside all the time? i am very interested in getting one, thinking about a 4000watter. i currently have just 2x600watt, fans, etc.,etc.

I've worked on generator projects in the past. But if you only have 2 x600w why the generator? It's not going to save you money if that was the concern. The only reason I've seen them in use is for larger ops that want to stay off the grid. If you had 4 + 1000w lights I would think that's about the minimum to start in on generators.

in my opinion, thats not enough power to need a generator. You can run both of those on the same breaker without an issue. You hydro bill would be higher, but you could compensate by using cfl's in your house, and unplugging and or turning off unused equipment and appliances. Even two 1000's on seperate breakers isnt that much.

there are low noise generators and or portable ones, check this site for more info and specs http://www.poweredgenerators.com/silent-generators.html

you certainly wont save a dime on power considering initial and fuel costs. and your not using enough power to raise eyebrows, thats not even the juice a central air unit will pull.

waste IMO.

wow, i hear ya. my power bill increased 100 bucks the first month a ran 2x600w24x7. and 2x600cfm vortex, 2x portable ac units, mom and babys small cfl room and my 2x oscillating fans. thats alot. i may need to run a new subpanal up because if i try to run all this ish at once, it straight up blows the breakers. i tell ya'll what i did, i had 2x220v electric floor heaters in which i heat my house with. i unwired and converted both my 600's on seperate 220v plus and breakers. then i pluged my 2x portable ac units in, cut fans and all that on and my breakers fliped in about 2 min. i guess my house is old and there are 2x breakers in the room, but i think the ac's really run up those amps. they are 15a breakers to thoughl. i just hate to keep raising my power bill and hope i dont raise no flags. i do wanna add more lights but im to scared.

Veg with cfls. Then you don't have to run your 600w hps/mh for 24/7 with all that other stuff.

I also don't think you need a generator, but a complete exhaust from your attic with vibration pads is probably the way to go--at least it wont be exposed to the elements.

but if i veg with cfl, wont i be losing out on a bit? i mean ist the 600mh going to increase root size and quantity and do it at a faster rate? if it doesnt matter ill just both hid lights into the flower room. but i think it would be better to veg under hid, dont you?

its just plain silly to think your going to save electricity vegging with CFL's. sure you might be using less wattage but your also getting less performance out of your plants because your getting less lumens for your watts.

nothing replaces HID lighting. period.

that was my thought also. i had neva heard of doing that unless you are just doing a cfl grow. which i have one going now just to see what happens

dont ge me wrong...cfl's are great when needed. like when heat or stealth come into play.
Haha...veg with CFL's. You'll save a ton compared to going out and buying a generator....that's the point.

How long are you veggin' anyway? Vegging with HID in most cases is a waste unless you are growing monster plants, which obviously means you don't care much about efficiency.

If efficiency is your concern, then vegging with floro's is the only way to go. I veg for 2 weeks under floro's and go into flowering with my HID's. Why would I run an HID veg room for tiny plants? Light landing everywhere but the leaves, how is that more efficient?

Particularly if it means doing something drastic like buying a generator or running A/C.

Yes, I know, nothing replaces HID. The plants will grow BETTER under MH. I was never debating that.

HOWEVER, you can sufficiently veg a plant with cfls. You can't do it with 1 13w cfl, but 10 26w cfls only use 260watts of electricity and produces 16000 lumens--less than an equivilent HID, but enough to veg some plants and save 340watts.

Personally, I want to invest most of my resources into flowering. If you're concerned about the bill, using fluoros for veg might be alternative you want to pursue.

your point is taken and you are right. i have had alsmost the same success with veg. in cfl and veg. in mh. well, close but not the same. as far as heat goes, whether its in hid or cfl, the temps go way up here and i have to run my portable ac when temps. go above 50 degree outside the house.

I hear ya. I cease growing in those conditions. It get's to being 100 degrees Farenheit here and when it does that, there's no way around using an A/C.

Because I don't grow commercially and I don't like dealing with the added problems of summer growing, I tend to stay away from it. I will veg some plants during the summer to get genetics going and I'll start some mothers under some CFL's or my T-5, but I can't even dream of running my flower room. It's just too damn hot outside and it'll be too hot inside.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

get a 400w mh with a cooled hood. it will run cooler, cheaper, and more efficiently than a barrage of cfl's. it will be easier to maintain as well, wiring up a bunch of cfl's or hanging a hood?
