Remote ID Sept 20, 2023 Update Date Extension and Myths

Remote ID Sept 20, 2023 Update Date Extension and Myths

In this video I will go over the extension of the FAA's Remote ID compliance date from Sept 16, 2023 to March 16, 2024, six months later. The Remote ID requirement is technically in place after Sept 16, 2023. Rather, the FAA will not take any enforcement actions until March 16, 2024.

The main reason for this date extension is the lack of remote ID modules for RC pilots and their aircraft. Remote ID modules are coming onto the market as of Sept 20, 2023. By March 2024 there should be more than enough of these components to ensure all drone pilots can comply with remote ID regulations.

I also cover some "myths" of remote ID to include the number of FAA Recognized Identification Areas, AMA insurance and remote ID and the FAA's rule making process.

So rather than watching all those videos what's your perspective on the remote ID thing and how does that affect us Canadian flyers? I'll check the videos out later but just taking short breaks while I do some housekeeping and tidying up around here. The toilet sparkles! :D

I don't like it, but under 250gms in the US you don't need it, as for Canada...

I'm busy cleaning up and don't have time for a 22 min video atm so is why I asked for your assessment. I'll catch it later.

It appears to be a concerted effort by western governments in Canada, the US and EU to kill the drone/RC hobby, mostly led by pilot types who run that part of transport Canada. There are measures like not being allowed to advertise an outdoor flying event like and RC meeting or drone race outdoors! Always having the drone in sight etc and FPV requiring a spotter. If you are flying in the sticks or abandoned buildings, or at a RC field the rules need to be relaxed for places where there are no others than participants. Kids under 14 are not allowed to fly outdoors even under the supervision of an adult so they are making sure to kill the hobby with the next generation or restrict it to under 250 grams. All this comes with the price of killing the domestic drone industry and RC/drones are a STEM educational activity, Science, Technology, Engineering and Materials, it covers them all. There are worse things teens can get up to than being outdoors flying drones and RC planes.

A lot of this is being driven by what is happening in Ukraine, anybody who is into the RC hobby knows you can make a cheap GPS guided cruise missile from cheap RC plane parts and even foam board or an FPV weapon that can be steered to its target 10 miles away, if conditions are right and there is a clear line of sight. The Billionaire class or anybody else worried about others with a chip on their shoulders should be concerned about 3 KG of HE diving on them! Also, companies like Amazon want to make the low altitude airspace safe for autonomous drone deliveries and do what citizens are forbidden to do, two laws, one for the rich corporations and another for you who might get in the way. The issue is that nobody has ever been killed and few seriously injured by hobby RC plane or drone, the smaller foam planes and drones make this even more unlikely. The regulations were not really driven by safety concerns or complaints, except for the odd pervert peaking in windows with a drone. The same regulations started appearing around the same time in all western countries with a few exceptions.

This guy is in BC and this was released 4 months ago, he didn't want to identify himself to the TV station that showed the video and for good reason.

Wouldn't you know it. As soon as I find a fun new thing to do they quash it. I can do what I want on my private property but it's pretty boring just buzzing around the acreage. I best get busy and start that basic flying course before they quash that too.

Fuck those greedy bastards and their oppression of a fun and educational hobby like this. As if terrorists types are not going to be able to do what they want if that's their plan. Like the stupid gun laws the Libs are pushing as if it's us legal gun owners are the ones out shooting the place up.

Having to fly my little drone using the DJI Fly app means they can restrict my use to whatever draconian laws go on the books too.

We still aren't done dealing with cannabis laws that still need removing and now some of us will have another fight on our hands.

This will set you back a grand in Canada, or if you already have an RC radio batteries and charger it would be cheaper. You could easily FPV this thing with a pan and tilt micro camera in the pilot's position, or a $25 all in one FPV camera/transmitter that you stick on with tape. Here it has the 2 big battery complete RTF (Ready To Fly) kit option. With Li-ion batteries it could have a lot more endurance than with a Li-po, but you might not be able to configure it for the lower voltages involved.

If you wanna blow $100 CDN on this toy, it looks like it can be FPVed for fun. The point is you get a lot of electronics for $100 bucks, even if it uses inferior bushed motors. It weighs under 100gm AUW and is easy to fly with a built-in flight control computer and optical flow helping.

I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with the drone I got. I may not even do that flying course and just eat the $50. Fun to play with but it doesn't seem to float my boat as much as getting back into tying flies and building rods then fishing them. Thinking of getting back into stained glass again too. My reflexes etc are definitely not what they used to be so I'll never be a 'flyer' of any note but can just work on being competent with the mini for photo ops and such. Photography has always been a hobby of mine and I still like shooting in film with my Canon AE-1s but if I had cash to spare I'd pick up a good digital on marketplace or somewhere. Where some guy has a decent camera with a bunch of accessories and you get lots of stuff for cheap. Or I get one that I can use my lens with an adaptor and go digital cheap.

A nice digital that does HD video and a 3 gimbal hand mount that can be used on a tripod too and I have a couple good ones and few decent ones. Maybe make a trip up to the cabin next year and get some great footage in the Bridge River canyon and at the cabin. Nice waterfall at the end of the creek that drains our lake and already have thoughts of a nice flight along the creek bed below the falls, under the bridge toward the falls and a nice rise up to the top. Need to practise my control more by then. Will be able to charge batteries while driving around so might want a couple more of those. The charger can do 4 with 2 USB outlets too.

Why do the damn batteries lose charge so fast? I can fill them up and if it's been a few days I'll re-charge them and they are only blinking up to the 3rd light and take 20 min or so to be done. The controller seems to stay charged up for ages and could last a dozen batteries I think. My phone starts charging off it when I hook up too.

A lot of people into photography and videography have drones since they can take great photos and videos from unique perspectives. With the proliferation of cellphones that can take great photos, it where photographers went, into the air. Even if you walked with the camera in the drone, I still think the steadycam feature will work to smooth out the video footage.

Yeah. With the drone on the camera still works like it was in the air so could use it as a steady cam for short videos but it gets hot without the props spinning to cool it off. Just got a message that my fly course only has 14 days left so that one is gone. No time to work on it in that period of time. Maybe later.
