Fox Farm Happy Frog and Ocean Forest ratio

Dead thread ... But your pitch sounds solid.

I used to put FFOF at base of containers ( bottom 1/3 ) as a CHARGED BASE because it had all the goodies already in it. The remainder topped with light warrior or dr. earth veg mix soil. Some go straight from bag but after it French fried a few plants , I mixed it down with a lighter mix ( 50/50 ) peat mix . Perlite is a given.
I’ve started in LW. Recently mixed in a bit of happy frog on top for a little added benefit since LW doesn’t have much in it. I’ve had trouble in the past during the flowing stage with OF. Hoping the dolomite and happy frog tones down the mixture.

Thank you for your reply!

I’ll jump in. I use FFOF, never had any problems. I’ve had gnats but I wouldn’t blame that on my store bought soil. I’ve never had a problem dropping my seedlings directly into the soil. Once my grows get going and I “pot up” I use an amended FFOF which is hot with Nitrogen, but is good for long term use with NO bottled nutes. Just top dressings of organics. I have never used any other soil. That is my 2cents you almost surely need to add something for calcium and magnesium. I think that is a consensus around here?

You bring up a valid point about adding cal/mag during flowering. This may have been part of my troubles in the past. Also a smart play with organic. FFOF is easy to turn “hot” by adding nutrients too early.

Thanks for helping keep this thread alive.

I used HF for seedlings and when I up pot I used the said mixture and they were good for my 4 week veg .. I am going to use this same mix for my next run only difference I am going to top dress with build a soil flowering top dress for flower to see how it turns out ....

Yes! That was my problem with bottled nutes!!! Every time I looked at a bottle I burned something. So I went organic for that buffer zone. I’ve never looked back

Roots Organics Dry Nutrients as top dress and light amendments, and Roots 5mL Master Pack for watering in. I don’t get burn. And it’s some of the best quality organics you can buy in a bottle and bag. I have some FoxFarms amendments, like Phosphorus Bat Guano. You can tell in the consistency and the scent that Roots’ quality of guano is superior.

Thank you for the tip! Will look into this afternoon.

Do you add any sort of limestone to your mix?

Fox Farm Ocean Forrest is not organic and neither are bottled nutrients. :wall::wall::wall:
I don’t use bottles and FFOF works for me, I guess there are chemicals in it? By the way your banging your head, I’m not the only guy growing “organic” with FFOF but I’m sure you can correct all of us

I was referring to the person that said " And it’s some of the best quality organics you can buy in a bottle and bag."
Oops , my Bad.... I thought you were talking to me!! Some people sound like trolls when they speak of what they use as feed. Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Happy growing bro

5 years later and same thing! ..my last bag ffof was loaded with gnats
No bueno. This is the first is years I’ve heard about gnats in FF.

Is this problem associated with all FF blends or solely OF? Not sure how Fox makes their soil to be honest.

The bigger question is, might there be a way to correct the issue? Potentially by “cooking” the soil prior to use?

I have been using ocean forest with 25% added perlite for years with no problems related to the soil.

I tested happy frog and a 50/50 mix but better results from ocean forest every time.

Adding lime pushes the mix up in ph to much. They already add the proper amount of superior oyster shell.

Gnats take hold in any garden that the humidity is not controlled. Even if they get into a bag at the store they die off with a good dry cycle.

All these are in of with 25% perlite and watered with .2 ec well water.
