your right over watering is a bad thing, but flushing properly can be a very good thing, I flush everytime I water

as to how, it amounts to running 3 times the amount of water thru the pot as the pot size so as example 1 gallon pot requires 3 gallons of water

I had the same question a couple of grows ago. i'm assuming you are in soil? i got a couple of different answers from people. some people call "flushing" simply stopping nutes and using clear water the last 2 to 4 weeks before harvest. other people call "flushing" exactly what riddleme described: running a bunch of water through your container to flush out all the accumulated salts which can cause nute lock. as to how often to flush this way some people do it alot and other people do it once or twice a grow. keep this in mind tho, i flushed one of my grows a bunch, like every other time i watered, and i ended up with what i believe was a nute deficiency of some sort (blood red stems and sickly looking plants.) so not only are you flushing out the bad stuff but you may be flushing out the good stuff too. some people don't run water through the containers at all for that reason. personally now days i water when my pots feel light when i pick them up. then i water as much as it takes so a little bit of water runs out the bottom of the pot for a minute or two. i suppose it also depends on what type and how often you use nutes and the soil you are growing in. always so many variables to consider.

oh and i forgot, the water you use is a big variable too. if you use tap water you may have lots of solids that can accumulate which might need to be flushed more often. i am using RO filtered water now so i shouldn't have those solids to deal with. (although some people love tap water and say it's got lots of good minerals and stuff in it.) who knows!

Hi.Thanks bro..finally some answers...yes ur right,im in soil, using organic fertz and biobloom...im using tap water, but uses ph down powder,so it drops from 7.5 ph -6.5 ph.. water good every 5 days or so,when dry..Do i need to flush?even though im growing in the "green" way??

hi - i suppose you'll get varying answers from different people. my nutes are organic as well and i use fox farm ocean forest (although this time i mixed some ROOTS in with it.) i don't worry about PH too much these days. i used to measure it each time i watered and adjust it but the last couple of grows i didn't mess with it and everything turned out just fine. IMHO..my guess would be if your tap water isn't full of gunk and solids and you're not dumping a boat load of nutes on your girls you might need to flush only once a grow. i suppose container size might come into play too? and if you're growing some sativa and vegging and flowering forever maybe more often. i don't flush at all anymore because of my RO filtered water however if i were using my tap water, which is full of solids, i'd flush once or twice a grow. my fear always is that if i run too much water thru the pots i'll be flushing out vital nutrients and not know how if i can or how to replace them...... make sense?

I grow in dirt and I flush at least every 2 weeks..

Removes fertilizer salt build up.

When I do regular watering though I always double the amount of water( That means I get half back of what I poured in) and when I fertilize the first half is straight water and second pour is nutes. I wait until the first pour stops running out the bottom and slowly pour in the nute solution.

Later in grow I might bang on sides of pot with a hammer when I water( gently..plastic pot of course ) to move the soil around. Another option is to drop pot on concrete from a few inches high.
As any kind of soil will clump up eventually..thats where you get nute build up and burn from.

I personally prefer 3 gallon size ...if I do ever get root overrun I will re-pot...but so far 3 gallon is doing fine.

Even organic ( which I use ) fertilizer needs to be flushed...

The small size gives me good control of the soil...

Im going organic too and i only flushed once when i switched to flowering... Some say you dont need to flush at all with organics. I dont plan on flushing untill the last week. A flush is essential at the end of flowering to remove the harsh taste of the nutes.

not true, plant is not a toilet (to quote UB) you can't flush it, and the medium only needs one good flush to clear nutes from it

it is proper drying and curing that removes the bad/harsh taste, plant converts a lot of stuff to sugars (ever burn sugar) proper drying & curing ferments these sugars into the taste we all crave

I add nutes every time I water, hence why I flush and why I call it making it rain

Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible By Jorge Cervantes says that flushing removes nutrients from the growing medium. Plants should be flushed a week or so before harvest so that the roots take in clean water and the plant expels fertilizers which can give it a bad taste when smoked. The plants should be flushed with a couple gallons of water 7 to 10 days before harvest and the only other time to flush is if you've added too much fertilizer.

One more thing.... I water by weight.

Not picking it up and seeing how heavy it feels....but on a actual scale.

I filled the pot..weighed it dry..and allowed one pound extra per month during flowering for root and plant weight.

Working like a charm...no more guessing.
A 5 or 10 pound ( or any) weight does not feel the same way every day..proven fact.
