First time grower using coco

OMG... add me to the list of first time growers.... using Coco and a kit from HTG.... AND having problems.

I have the large tent..... float & grow... coco etc. etc.... I started 3 White Widow seeds..... they did great until 8 days out of the Coco.... then they stopped growing and the leaves started turning yellow.

I just got my PH meter yesterday and discovered that my tap water has a PH of 8.0! I read the grow FAQs again an my problem looks like a Zinc deficiency due to a high pH. The pictures of the leaves look exactly like what's going on with my plants.

I don't want to use nutes at this early stage. I did get the PH down to 6.0 and am hoping a few days of watering with the lower PH will solve the prolem.

I got the Mokey Juice with my kit too. It's suppose to be formulated for use with Coco. I haven't heard anything bad about the stuff and it's made by Advanced Nutrients so I find it hard to believe it's not a good nute. If my plants survive the seedling stage and make it to Veg... I'll give the Monkey Juice a shot.

Heat is an issue for me too... those tents get HOT with the HID lights. I have to buy a portable a/c to keep the room temp in check..... and I don't zip the tent closed either.

Anyway.... looks like I'm rowing the same boat as you guys here.....

Florida Girl, you should know that since coco provides absolutely no nutrients to the plants they will turn yellow a little with plain water only. All my seedlings were a bit yellow at first but once you start with the nutes they will green up nicely. Definitely get that ph down to around 6.0 and keep the heat in check. Also listen to User and Tetra and remember that when it comes to nutrients too little is way better than too much. I learned this the hard way. Check my journal in my sig if you want to see what nute burn looks like. Don't let it happen to you.

Glad to have you along....exactly how far along are you??

Today is Day 10 from seed... they've been popped out of the Coco for 5 or 6 days now but they stopped growing a few days ago.... the leaves are the size they were pretty much on day 2 out of Coco.

I have no idea if they will survive or not.... but I'm going to keep feeding them the lower PH water and see how it goes.

I also just planted 2 Blueberry seeds...they haven't popped up yet.... but they've only been watered with the corrected PH water so hopefully they'll do well.

Hmmmmmm everything I've read about Coco says it does provide all the food seedlings need until they get to the Veg stage and there is no need for nutes before then. Now I'm even more confused

LOL.... oh well.... trial and error..... hopefully I'll learn some things along the way.

you shouldn't need anything other than tap water for the first couple of weeks.

I think they mean the minerals in the tap water provide all the nutrients they need. Plus we're only talking about 8-10 days until you can call it "veg."

Yes, I agree no nutes for the first few weeks. I'm just saying to expect some yellow during that period.

As much as they will take. My growth speed has picked back up too and I'm getting lovely odors coming out my closet. Things are looking up.:mrgreen::mrgreen:

are you using tap water??

Yep.... like I said.... it was 8.0 ( which I think is what caused the Zinc deficiency).... but I've got that under control and it's now holding between 5.9 - 6.1
.

I have a 5 gallon bucket in the back of my tent with airstones and a water pump and my PH/PPM meter in the tent so I can easily feed the plants the PH corrected water.

If possible I'd like to avoid the Nutes until (and if) they make it to the Veg stage.

If you're really worried about your plants, I would recommend getting some pictures up. That way, some of the more experienced people might say, "That's not your problem, this is your problem." It's helped me a lot so far.
