First Time Grower - Feedback on setup and plan welcome

Hi there, thanks to everyone (almost everyone) for contributing on these forums. There's a wealth of information here and I'm blown away by those who take the time and effort to contribute, much appreciated!

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of Northern Lights and Blue Dream from Nirvana (ordered mid-Feb) and thought I’d introduce myself and get some feedback on my setup and plan of action in the meantime…

2.5x5x6 grow tent

ES300 LED w/dimmer

4in AC Infinity inline fan

4x14 active air carbon filter

6 inch oscillating fan

8 inch adjustable fan

Sensorpush temp + humidity monitor

FF Light Warrior + Ocean Forest + Perlite

7 gal fabric pots (13x12.5)

BioBizz Starter Pack

Earth Juice Mykos

Plan is to only germinate Northern Lights (5 seeds) and save Blue Dream for the second grow. Chose Northern Lights for all the obvious reasons for a first timer. Happy with the negative pressure, I can get in the tent with fan at half speed (the 90-degree bend and 4 to 3 reducers hidden by insulated ducting were necessary to achieve this). Posting a screenshot too of the average temps and humidity of the empty tent.

Pot size progression: solo cup>>> ? >>> 7 gal fabric pot

Ideally, I’d like to have to transplant only once but have read that watering a small plant in large pot can be tricky for a beginner. Seems like solo cup >> 5 gallon might be a better option. Is there much of a difference in the frequency of watering between a 5 gallon and 7 gallon fabric pot?

Cheers!

Hey man, welcome

Theres def a little difference in the 5g and 7g watering, 7g will take an extra day or 2 before its ready to water compared to the 5g

I went from solo cups to 2g to 5g my first run, second run i went from solos to 3g to 7g

Many growers go directly to the final pot, you just need to be cautious with watering cause obv its easy to over water a small plant in a big pot.

I like your equipment and you have nice genetics, me thinks you did some researching and leg work while getting prepared for this first time. It will show in the grow if you keep that mindset

Keep reading the forums, use growweedeasy.com and learn learn learn lol

Best of luck with it

Wow, you are starting out with everything. Go big or go home! You should have a really successful first time grow.
And personally I would just start out in the 7 gallon, but it would be hard to determine by the weight for your first grow. Skip out on the 5 gallon and just go from solo cup to 7 gallon. Only reason I would start straight in the 7 gallon is because you remove the chance of breaking roots while transplanting.

Good to be here diggs99! Seeds arrived this afternoon :)

I've spent a good amount of time on your journal and some others, thanks for your contribution. I've been thinking about setting up a garden since Dec 2017 and finally put the plan into action and it feels great.

The convenience of not having to water as frequently was the reason I went for the 7g over 5g originally so I'm gonna stick with the plan (and trust the vent system to control the environment when necessary).

Journal coming soon.

Yep i agree, well done. Northern lights is a great first grow strain! Only advice i could really offer at the moment is when you have plants/medium in there and lights on etc, humidity and temps will change and to have some control over these could be crucial. (For example if temp gets a bit high, you increase the fan to 100% but then humidity may drop to low or vice versa.) But if your like me you don't always know all the equipment youll need untill you do a grow. This is how youll dial your grows in with experience. But one of the better 1st grow setups ive seen. Well done!

you may only be able to run three possibly four in 7g pots. I'm in a 2x4 with three 5g pots and there's not much room between them

Thanks purpaterp and good looking out Juiceifer.

My tent will fit 4 7gal pots and saucers comfortably and I can even jam a 5th if needed.

I popped 5 northern lights from nirvana into a cup of brita water tonight. Plan is to a check them after 12 hours or so and transfer to solo cups with Light Warrior.

Prepped the solo cups tonight and got the medium wet and under a heating pad, ready for the morn.

Well that isn't very nice!
(You probably didn't mean it like I read it the first time)
Lol took me a few minutes to understand what you were saying but no wasn’t trying to be rude, I see how it could read like that though. I sincerely believe he will have a good first grow seems like he did his research.

If you go with 4 or even all 5 keep that veg time low they will fill out... if your pots are cramped just imagine those stretching bushy tops

My setup is the same light but a 2x4x6 tent
The first pic is at 5 1/2 weeks from sprout the day I flipped
The second is at 2 weeks of flip so 7 1/2 weeks total
The stretch is no joke! Lol

Plants need at least 2 sq ft for healthy growth. I'm having a hard time even fitting 4 in a SCROG in my 5 x 5. You'll see

Thanks for the input and pics Juicifer, really helpful to know what to expect from a similar sized tent and led.

I played around with the setup of my vent system and originally had the carbon filter in a similar position to you but realized I may have space/height issues with more mature plants as the light was raised. I also didnt want to create a cap/top within the grow space with the light being so close to the filter if that makes any sense (trying to not impede any airflow).

I don't know how you hung your stuff but zip ties were so crucial for being able to experiment with different positions without having to have an extra set of hands. With my 14" carbon filter mounted on the 30" side of my (2.5X5x73") and an 8 inch fan ziptied to the top of the tent on the opposite 30" side, I'm blowing air directly over the heat sinks towards my carbon filter and can raise my light without having to worry about bumping into the filter, ducting, or fan.

Decided to swap out the 7gal for 5gal. Saves me a couple inches in height and allows my saucers to catch any side drip better (in addition to more breathing room for the ladies).
