First Grow Seed Recommendations, criteria inside, will +rep

Hey everyone in RIU...this is my first post on the forum.

I recently got interested in growing for personal use. I will never be growing probably more than one or two plants at one time.

Interested in a strain that has a moderate THC content, is cloneable, and is easy to grow. This is my first grow, afterall.

After comparing and reading, I was leaning towards the AK-47, Lowryder, or Northern Lights. Not looking to spend a lot at first, $50 would probably be the maximum.

I'm about half through flower on a nl#5 right now. Seemed to be a fairly good starter strain. That is its reputation. Getting nice bud with minimal light, 78 watts of cfl(micro grow).
Bought my beans from highgrade-seeds, they're a slightly less used seed breeder on RIU. Attitude and Seed Boutique are some pretty popular sources here. Highgrade is reasonably priced, about $55 for 10 seeds delivered. His strong point is supposed to be delivery, guarantees delivery, and his rep is good here for that claim.

Thanks man. That looks like a good seed bank to buy from. $55 seems like a very decent price and will continue to check that out. I'm guessing he is based out of Canada? How strict is customs on that seed bank, I wonder.

I couldn't find any NL on Attitude...am I looking in the wrong place?

jndietz read this article by DJ Short (legendary Blueberry breeder) and type in what type of effect you want for each section.

DJ Short

The first spectrum to consider is the "up and down". "Up" refers to the stimulating aspects of cannabis, while "down" refers to sedative qualities. Up pot tends to liven the disposition and stimulate the emotions, inspiring sociability and talkativeness. Down pot tends to produce sedative and depressant effects. Some people refer to stimulating pot as being a "head" high and sedative pot as being a "body" high, yet although partially true this is also misleading.

Body and head highs are the next spectrum of the cannabis experience. Generally speaking, head highs are stimulating and body highs are sedative, but not all are. Some body highs are stimulating and some head highs are depressing. I once sampled a terribly paranoia-inducing head pot that inspired great couch lock qualities. I called it Boo-Goo.

Early to late harvest will affect the head to body spectrum expressed by a certain plant, with the later harvest tending to produce more body and sedative effects. However, I believe that certain aspects of this spectrum to be genetically inherited.

Next to consider are aspects of duration. Some cannabis tends to be short-acting (15-30min) whereas other varieties last much longer (6-7 hours). Once again production, harvesting and curing techniques can influence aspects of this spectrum, but much of this effect is inherited.

For me, the most important aspect of the cannabis experience to consider is tolerance. This refers to the product's ability to provide the same experience via the same amount over time – the burnout factor. By "over time" I mean the long run: months, years, decades...

Most of the cannabis I see on the market today has a terrible tolerance factor – a quick burnout time with the product's novelty lasting less than a week. Luther Burbank's model of breeding needs to be employed here and no expression of tolerance to your product is to be tolerated. An example of where intolerance to tolerance is tolerated – enough already!

Another aspect of tolerance is "ceiling." This refers to how high (or far) one is capable of going with the variety. How many hits can you consume until more hits are unnoticeable? Most indicas have a low ceiling of less than 10 hits. For me that's usually around 5 hits in one smoking session. If I smoke more than 5 hits of a strong indica I will either not notice the post-ceiling hits, or I will fall asleep.

Some sativas have a very high ceiling, or seem to have none at all! This means that the more you consume, the higher and further you go. Oaxaca Highland Gold, Black Magic African, and Highland Thai were some of the herbs I've tried with very high or no ceiling.

The final aspect of mental effects to consider when sampling strains for breeding is the tendency to produce anxiety. Certain strains of cannabis increase anxiety while others decrease it. This is also true for other emotions, which some strains may suppress while others may augment their intensity. Generally stimulating and head varieties are the ones that can produce unwanted anxiety, but this is not always the case. Quickly cured buds or an over-early harvest are contributing factors to anxiety-increasing pot, but this trait is also genetic in nature.

Yeah highgrade is out of canada. His stealth is pretty good. I did 2 separate orders to northeast usa, both got through no problem. Also did 1 order to seed boutique, that 1 came through fine too.

As far the customs, that looks to be luck for the most part. I think the midwest customs is a little tougher to get through.

Not sure where NL would be on the attitude site, haven't used them yet. I'm sure NL is somewhere there, may take a little effort.

I'll put some strains up for you to read over, then you can direct us towards the characteristics you're looking for.

.

"I will never be growing probably more than one or two plants at one time."

How much bud do you go through - how much are you going to need a month? What type of grow setup do you have? Lights, grow rooms - veg and/or flower, odor control (AK47 stinks like cat piss on a dead skunk), ...

"Interested in a strain that has a moderate THC content, is cloneable, and is easy to grow. This is my first grow, afterall."

"After comparing and reading, I was leaning towards the AK-47, Lowryder, or Northern Lights. Not looking to spend a lot at first, $50 would probably be the maximum."

AK47 - stinks during growth, need odor control, very potent.
Lowryder - autoflowering is good for first grow. Lots of autoflower crosses - Blueberry, Diesel, etc ..
Northern Lights - very low smell, great stone, easy to grow, short

I grew PeakSeedsBC 's Northern Lights last year, from a 22" 4 cola plant I got 2 - 2.5 oz. Low smell, but the stone was too moderate for my tastes. Peak is a fantastic company, ships World Wide, $40 US for any strain including shipping.

Jillybean - Subcool (Mz Jill) - Very well reviewed strain, respected breeders. Medical Breeders, author.

"We had 5 females in our bud room and 4 could be clones there so similar same height same growth speed and all have that Dank Orange smell. Very good mood elevator and general euphoria are experienced while high on this cross. Lime green with Vibrant Orange Hairs with temperature drops it can turn a deep burgundy to maroon."

I personally don't smoke very much. Sometimes only a few times a month. I would be probably giving the rest away or just having people over to enjoy it. The lighting setup is a pretty basic "entry level" CFL kit that is based off of what I read in Seemore Buds. I have been reading online about the use of different color temperatures for vegetative and flowering. The space hasn't been determined yet. It may be a small closet under some stairs in the basement.

For a first grow I'd say northern lights is a great strain. Speed Queen from Mandala looks like a great strain for a beginner, fast too.
Mandala seeds through attitude ran me $44 to texas.

good luck

If you are looking for Northern Lights on the Attitude seed bank site, try looking under the "Nirvana seeds" catagory. They have the regular NLs OR the NL crossed with Shiva.

The first strain i grew was super skunk, very easy strain to grow, great yeild and fairly potent weed. Grown using organics it has a very nice taste, 2 main phenos I taller branchy Skunk1 pheno, very sweet tasting, somewhat grapey. Afgan pheno shorter one large cola, more hashy skunky. Both were good but i think i prefered the afghan pheno which was more skunky.... i love the skunk!

I'd like to strongly recommend one more classic to you. Hindu Kush. Great to grow for a first timer with decent yield, quick flowering time, and it's pretty strong. Hard to go wrong with that.

It comes in an autoflowering variety too if that's what you're into.

and the autoflowering:

Hey man, where's the plus rep? Not that it matters much in the grand scheme but truth in advertising is a good policy to start with:neutral:

Anything Cannacopia
Yes, I couldn't agree more. In fact I made a whole thread about it about a month ago. https://www.rollitup.org/seed-strain-reviews/202229-why-dont-i-see-more.html It addresses this very issue of why I think Cannacopia has got to be one of the best choices for a first timer (or anyone really) looking for AFFORDABLE gear. I wouldn't go with the Bubba Kush only because it takes some experience to get a decent yield with it but the BC Roadkill is top notch in every way - smell, taste, potency, yield, bag appeal, appearance while growing, etc etc. You will not be disapointed guaranteed. I've grown plenty of Nirvana beans and it seemed so bland next to the Cannacopia.
