First Closet Grow with Envirolites

Californian orange grow started 15/5/07.

This is a rag tag closet grow im doing. This is a photoshoped photo to get a gist of the space, hence the strange blend marks!

Basically i cut a hole in the top of the closet, put a vent in and connected it to an outlet tile in my attic.
This will be my exhaust and i will sort out an inlet vent later. Any suggestions??
For now i can open the doors occasionally to vent a bit of heat and my computerfan i have rigged up to a power supply will help.

monday 14th, Planted seeds midnight in peat pods and placed tray on window ledge.

Thurs 17th , Shoots appeared so i placed in my growcloset under 220W 6400k envirolite @ 18/6 cycle.

Wed 23rd , I read tonight in the forum about when to transplant from the pellets.
The advice was "check the bottom of the pellet regularly for the first sign of root...".
Well I checked mine and there it was, all two inches of it, spiraling round the base. Not Good!. So that explains why they took a spurt in height,
to about 2/3 inches high.

So i did what any newbie would do.

I panicked.
And like a dribbling idiot, grabbed five random unoccupied plant pots, All different sizes of course, to transplant my lanky seedlings
into.

(This is my first grow from seed so i'm kinda winging it) :-) I will post details of my last grow laters!

Fri 25th, while scouring the forum, i seen a pic of some seedlings in disposable plastic drinking cups and took it onboard.
Much better to have all of them on a level playing field. Better for air circulation and the ability to have my growlite as close as possible
to the tops.
Plus i found a great tip for altering lanky seedlings. It advised to bury the them babies deeper down in the soil. Leave about an inch of
stem showing from the soil and mother nature shall reward you with new roots from the buried stem and a little bush!!!

Sun 27th, this morning i am seeing some worrying signs from three of the five. :spew::confused:

Any opinions on the cause would be welcomed.

I read that it might be the chlorine in the water im feeding them so i am airing all my water to evaporate the chlorine.

Up till now i've been feeding them room temp tap water so i think it might be a nutes defeciancy?!? HELP MY BABYS PLZ!!

I will keep it updated,

Mon 28th may, I am seeing signs of rootage at the sides of the plastic cups, so i think its time to transplant to bigger homes 2moro!!!

But i am still a little worried about the yellowing tips.

I have read that it might be heat damage so I raised the lamp a link or two.
But all in all i think there bloomin marvellous!!!!

Day 19 and they are coming along nicely!
I have replanted the five of them to 3litre pots two days ago, with a vermucilite and perlite soil mix. Three parts soil to half part af Verm and perl.
The yellowing tips have stopped and everythings looking great.
my friend reckons they look like baby cabbages  hehe
Not sure wether to be insulted or not??

Also i have been donated a baby lowryder #2, which is just about the best damn present i have gotten in a long time!!!

And after much thought and reseaching i have switched the light cycle to 24/0. I read alot of conflicting opinions on the "giving the plants a rest" issue.
But one comment that kinda stuck with me is that plants are kinda like machines. If they are maintained correctly, with all that they could need as regards light, food, correct temp and humidity, then there is no reason why the plant should'nt flourish.
Probably should start a seperate thread debate about this? :hump:

Flametop out:peace:

(for the pics i have raised up the light, which is usually inches from the tops)

So im just over three weeks into this grow and the *ahem* (HOPEFULLY!!) ladies are looking great. Im giving them water every 2 days or so and some low dosage nutes every third watering or so.

Also I have switched back to the 18/6 cycle because i happened upon a good thread in the general growing section,
that basically came to the conclusion that there will be more cases of males under the 24/0 cycle, so 18/6 it is!!

I'm wondering when i should start pruning so i must have a browse in the forum. Any suggestions on this, like when to? and what leaves to trim?

:peace:

Welcome flame top.
The air intake can be another hole in the ceiling.
Just get some 4 or 6" tubing and run from air duct into closet.
I would run the hose to the bottom of your closet either in the wall or just hanging to the bottom.

The lighting a thing of preference.
I like 18/6 once they are established.
I agree with the 24/0 until they get big enough 6-8"
Then I go 18/6 just because it seems like they seem to start new growth during the dark cycle.

You may also want to check into some co2 if you have not already.

What about your other grow?

Happy growing

thanks for the reply mig.
Its a bloody great site for all things cannibral!! and thx for the welcome!!
Thats a great idea about the extra ceiling hole!!
Now does it have to be bigger than the exhaust hole,
or will it just take in as much air as is been sucked out regardless of size?

And in response to my other grow, I got adoption papers for two plants.
One was about six inches high, grown in rockwool and the other was a pre flowered monster (about 3 ft tall) and basically i nursed an ounce and a half from them with three crappy 25w cfl's. Very small bulbs but could'nt complain with 1 1/2 oz's!! I'll post up some pics at a later date!!

So i have been a busy little bee over the last few days and have added a carbonscrubber-type-thing to my grow.
I assembled it from some chicken wire, kittylitter and an bathroom extractor fan.
Very magyver if i do say so myself
And i got enough materials with €50/$67, to make three or to maintain the one i made for years!!!!!
I'll keep y'all posted on how well it works :peace:

And the plants are looking nice and bushy. I'm thinking of topping them, maybe the FIM method, but I havent got a clue when to do it maybe you guys could offer some advice on when to.

Kitty liter doesnt filter like carbon just smells like a cat box
Yes it does smell like a cat box....... but a lovely fresh smelling, never had a cat near it, type cat box smell.
It really work's.
I left my scrubber off today and the smell from the plants was strong when i opened the door this evening.
I turned on the scrubber and when i came back a short while later the smell was gone and to tell you the truth it smelled of nothing really, if that makes any sence-"imilia"
Now im not sure if it's because of where it's positioned, with the fan sucking in 2mm from the underside of the reflector (see pic)
And it remains to be seen if its going to cope when the smelly flowering stage start's? ? but......its a big thumbs up for now.

Highly recomended for a grower on a budget as tight as two coats of paint

The type of cat litter used was unscented, odour trapping, granuals. It's primary function after all is to trap urine smells and the likes so technically it should do exactly what it says on the tin.

The plants are looking great, but they were getting fairly tall, 8-10", so i decided to FIM top them a day or so ago,
and i pinned down some of the big fan leaves out of the way of the side shoots with some hairdressing clips......Don't ask!! heheh

And its unbelievable the extra spurt of growth energy the plants have put into the side shoots!!
Hopefully iwill have a nice even canopy of frosty buds, all roughly on the same playing field

Quick update with a few pics,
I have got my grubby little mitts on a 250w flowering spectrum envirolite for the flowering stage, so here goes on the sexing front!!!!
I put the crop under 12/12 light three days ago and what d'ya know, the orphan annie, aka;Lowryder#2, has revealed her sexuality......
.......ITS A GIRL!!!!!
 Fooking marvellous
So thats one down and five to go. C'mon the ladies :hump:

I started, full recommended dosing,
with "Advanced Natural Power" Enzeymes and growth bloom excellerator, once every third feed or so.

And i am sort of having mixed results from my FIM topping exercise.
Three of them have really taken off, with great spurts of new growth sites.
And the other two are so-so.

Only time will tell......

Flametop out

not sure if these are balls or not?
They have been visible for two or three days now
and they don't seem to be sprouting into leaves, so i'm not too sure?
There on the strongest growing plant, so this could be a male.
I will post clearer shots later on but heres one for now
