Update -

Been a bit busy and needed to chime in on this thread . Plants are STILL running on original medium mix V2 under 4 days since flip .
Once bud sites officially begin to setup and stretch ( kind of started ) slows down , I will move to the Recipe 420 Ultra Bloom dry fertilizer. I am very happy with the trouble free grow under new layered mix .....

Been kind of dry ( Rh ) round these west coast parts and they have been drinking water every 2-3 days.
I have one of them throwing nuts ( dirty bastard ) / male ..... to bad it looks like a good healthy plant . I don’t need pollen , so tomorrow
i will grab the bastard , do a helicopter spin right into side of dumpster. LOL.

THIS IS WHY YOU ALWAYS HAVE BACKUPS....... :weed:
Shit happens.

Tent #2 :

These plants are in adjoining tent ( veg ) and are doing very well upfront with mix .... I do notice that I don’t get that “ nute burn “ like straight bagged FFOF is famous for. These plants adapted quickly . Now I’m Hubbing 2 Strawberry Diesel ( Hazeman seeds ) -
Strawberry cough x Sour Diesel . The other plants are Full moon Fever ( greenpoint ) Durban Poison x Stardawg , Cackleberry ( Cherry Diesel x Stardawg ) . All have been topped too. Usually I mist them after with very light ( Bushdoctor Boomerang ) for a treat and being a good patient. I began using 12 gauge wire for initial LST , but usually like doing cotton twine tie downs.

I also removed first leaf set and cotyledon.

OK ... late night and wanted to get this up .

Tip : Use similar peat based soil with FFOF when layering. Many problems occur with those using coco mixes ( example 70/30 ratio ).
Seen too many grows run into ph drift fluctuations since coco needs one way and soil another. Keep the base soil the same .

Here is a version for solo cup grows / seedling starts ( plug transplant ) .....
Regular red solo either alone or as an outer shell with clear solo cup inside ( in case you like seeing the roots grow ).
I used these on some cup comps but be aware that most cup contests here on RIU seem a bit like kindergarten with some growers.
I was floored by the Overthinking and EXCESS bottle feeds for a Stupid Cup ! You can get some decent cup grows from this layering
method.

Version 1

View attachment 4420084

Pretty self explanatory.... this a dry fert enhanced mix . You can use Megacrop / Dr.Earth life 5/5/5 / Gaia green / Flower Girl or myco inoculant .
1 tablespoon ( 1-3 gallon pot ) -
2 - 3 tablespoon for 5 gallon

This will feed for quite awhile and will be perfect for auto grows ( 90 days )
Top dress FFOF as needed later in grow ( optional )

Version 2

This an all FFOF BASE except of ( light seedling mix core ) with rooting powder or myco at bottom. Perfect for straight to seed planting / clone / rooter plug , etc.
Emerging seedling has a mild “ sandbox “ to start grow then allow acclimation before FFOF .
Less shock to young seedlings instead of right into FFOF alone . Plant containers can be plastic , fabric , airpots , bags or whatever.

Hope this helps .... goodnight.
How much myco at bottom of light mix in version two? assume great white

UPDATE - FLOWER TIME
layered V2 mix

Plants are crowning ( preflower ) and looking fabulous. That dry fertilizer is working like a champ.
Watered yesterday , so in about 3 days I will introduce the ultra bloom. Plants are stretching out also.
Maybe a last minute prune might be in order over the next week or so , maybe.

That male was culled ..... it was really a healthy plant ..... oh well.

So have the trio left.

I just read this whole thread. What a rabbit hole. I just want to say thanks, I am using FFOF right now and have been feeding with blue planet nutes and now am running into issues. After reading this i am almost certain that i went overboard and did more harm than good.

This was a very informative read and I just wanted to say thanks.

BIG UPDATE ( 5 days later )

Layered V2 mix

Well began to seriously move on those plants with a bit more LST and some pruning. Layered V2 mix is awesome so far , growth is
exploding. However Cali has had some dry ass humidity level a lately and watering has increased to every other day.

Today was 25% .... smh.

Thinking of either “ tweaking “ mix with vermiculite to help hold moisture a little longer at root level. I definitely have to watch plants lately as mix will get bone dry and hydrophobic . That’s when I sit them individually into a container to catch over flow and re-water with it until weight of bag is fully saturated. Some growers add aloe Vera to add “ wetness “ .... but may go the vermiculite way in my next grows ( since summer is coming ) and maybe some silica in the water .

Mix is keeping things the right amount of green without too much drama....... Since these are REGS in this medium , it is a no brained that this will work for you SOG 12/12 growers too. I STILL use Tap water and Zero Water filter pitcher to “ balance “ the water into range of 6.5 / 6.7 without adding ph down. Think of it as having water in each hand , ph meter sitting tap then adding zero water , then adding or reducing tap , back and forth til ranged ..... even then I can also play with final ppm level this way too. My final ppm across is 125 by doing this.

Yesterday they looked a little rough from the LST and minor Defol but today they look great and you can really see the structure I am building. I don’t stick to much to Nugbuckets style but like symmetrical shapes ( bonzai ? ) .

Cool thing about Hibbing / manifold ing is that you can pretty much go one way or other and get flat canopies.
No more ” Au Natural “ apical Christmas tree shapes for me.

I added some new solo cup plants - HSO BD BLUE DREAM in my mix . One seed stalled at germ ( and was culled ).

I accidentally severed a stem and top ( s ) with my training .... tried tape repair but she croaked so I removed it.
Now that plant will be topped one more time AFTER some de stress time ( even tho it is still perky ).

I am also Cloning in water with some cutting ( filtered water / oxygenated / clonex liquid yellow ) in 125 ml of total mix.
1/8 teaspoon of clonex solution in water. Plants are also misted with same mild solution. Been about 3 days so far.

The 2 middle Strawberry Diesels will be finalized in a couple weeks for flower and be moved to adjoining tent with some other plants.

I will list 2 versions of soil setup .......

1. Plain FFOF soil run only
2. Pelletized dry nute ammended ( self feed )

This bag is half filled AND HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN RUN TWO DIFFERENT VARIATIONS.

1. Fill remainder with same mix .
2. Add a tablespoon of Dry Fertilizer ( Dr. Earth 5-5-5 or megacrop 1 tsp ).

When running FFOF solo .... I merely MIST this half fill with water to hydrate it , then cover fill to top.

For Dry Ammend : I am using Dr. Earth LIFE fertilizer ( 5-5-5 ) or Megacrop
This method is similar to Canucks grow method using dry fertilizer and coco grows he does with autoflowers.

Note : I found Dr. Earth LIFE at the 99¢ ( half off ) in 1 gallon bags ! .... needless to say I grabbed a few .
Dr. Earth Fruit and Veg and Flower Girl are both good options also.

For some LED grows : CalMag “ may “ be needed occasionally and will only need be added 1tsp per gallon of water before use.

so I fill half way. Then add Dr. earth 1 tbs to the half filled pot. If I’m using a 5 gallon smart pot. Do I use 5 tablespoons in the middle?

The other method. Too dress with OF only. How would you do that? Scrape out a inch or so of top soil every time?
