The FLIR heli in my area which is run by Fish & Wildlife Sheriff is really cutting the air with a mighty wop wop wop. It's the one thing I like about it.

When I was posting about total darkness high res photos, I wasn't talking about FLIR. This is something entirely different and new.

Good luck...:peace:

The good news is you can hear them coming from a mile away.

My closet is about 10-15 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. Whenever I hear them coming I just open the closet door and the temp inside drops 5-10 degrees almost immediately. I'm probably overreacting, but choppers make me nervous.

They have MR (magnetic resonance), and radio telemetry that can be used to "see" great detail in the interior of your house. The upside is that the technology is SO prohibitively expensive, that only Special Ops will generally have them. We're talking real spook action. Our local boys don't have them, and probably WONT have them for quite some time. But sadly, it's just a matter of time before ALL the pieces fall into place, and there will be surveillance cameras everywhere.

Chances are that if you're hearing a chopper, it's NOT FLIR. They don't use FLIR as we know it or think about it for outside grow detection. All vegetation reflects light in unique and individual ways. They know how cannabis reflects light, and can easily identify it from the surrounding foliage.
Most FLIR equipment is owned by the Fire Dept, and/or SWAT. But don't be lulled by the fact that FLIR is expensive. Thats where the Federal grant monies come into play, especially now with PATRIOT. The feds give every state, county, and local law enforcement a "Homeland Security" grant, and LEO can buy what ever with that money. Those grants have put FLIR into the hands of even the poorest of jurisdictions. But just 'cuz they have it don't mean that they are using it!!! About 4 years ago, they made a big to-do about all the local agencies getting FLIR and training to use it. They neglected to say that they were limited in its use, and I'll bet that more than a few grows were never started, or were dismantled just because of that press release. So in that respect, it's a real deterrent.
The reason that it's probably not FLIR is that they need a warrant to use it, or at least to use any evidence obtained thru it's use. Thats not to say that they don't use it. They most definitely use FLIR, for instance, when they are serving a warrant, to be sure of the whereabouts of people inside the bldg, and to make sure that there isn't someone just inside the door in ambush. They use FLIR for night chases of subjects outdoors, but they cannot just randomly "fly over" a broad area looking for heat sigs. There are too many reasons other than a grow op for a house to have an unusual heat sig. Trying to track down and verify all the anomalies they would detect is prohibitive from a manpower stand point, not to mention what few constitutional protections we still enjoy.

Even the night optics in the C130 gunships...and let me stress there is no expense spared in their setup, cannot see through ceilings and watch people toking up a smoke. The only difference with the C130 Spooky Gunship optics and the ones used by your local DEA crew is that the C130 optics are as clear at 30,000 feet up as the DEA helicopters night optics are at 1000 feet. Coupled with options such as inverting the electro-optics from light/dark to dark/light.

What they see is the limitations of what can be seen with thermal imaging. Heat blotches. What they are scanning for in every case are heat blotches from growers venting hot air outside. But what the police will not disclose is that in almost every case where they use FLIR to indicate a grow room, they have already been tipped off by an informant.

The use of FLIR then, is to falsely manufacture probable cause to get a search warrant to raid a house. The FLIR footage of the raid on the police clerks house pretty much shows that. The houses surrounding the clerks house had larger heat signatures than the clerks house did. However the chopper crew already had the addressed locked into their sites because.....they had been tipped off by an informant. So all they needed to do was fly over the house, note any hot spot anywhere in the house, use the footage as probable cause and get a warrant to raid.

Its no different to when they pull you over in your car and make fake claims that they can smell marijuana therefore have probable cause to search your car, or knock on your door, and make the same fake claims when you open your door to talk to them. Its about bamboozling some judge into issuing them the warrant.

In other cases where FLIR was the initial reason for investigation, which is rare, it was because the growers were venting straight out the side of a house and the vent was in an odd location. In those cases that is not grounds alone for a warrant, in those cases they'll probably come rifle through your trash and probably even do the door knock trick mentioned earlier.

Your biggest worry are informants. News travels fast, if you're growing dank weed and you are handing it out to your friends, they will hand it to their friends and very soon a lot of people will know that someone is growing great bud. Only takes one of them to get busted for possession and in 95% of cases, they will inform on who sold them the weed, get them arrested, and they will inform too, eventually probably leading back to you.

That alone is not enough to get a warrant, thats when the FLIR bullshit comes in to impress the court with techo pics and heat blotches which could well be normal inside lighting under a non-insulated roof, as was the case mentioned in an earlier post.

Extremely well put!! FLIR is HIGHLY OVERRATED as a tool to detect grows. It's just one round in the clip of making the case against you.
Once you have popped up on the cops radar, it's only a matter of time before they make their case.
Informants are THE FIRST LINE of information used by cops. In over 90% of all grow op busts, the initial police contact was an informant. The cops then will use ANY MEANS to build a case against you. They can THEN go to the power co for your usage patterns, send random door knockers to your house, etc.
The facts are that the biggest security risk in the operation is the grower. Especially if they get a good bust on someone who knows about your grow. I can almost guarantee that any of your friends will give you up in a heartbeat if given the choice between you or them. Facing time does strange things to an otherwise very trustworthy person.
I don't believe for one minute that my grow will be discovered thru real police work or effort. If I do get busted, it will be the result of my own undoing.

I'd really like to know the statistics of how many cases where evidence obtained thru the use of FLIR is proven to be just thin insulation, or a water heater, or something other than what the cops say it is. Trust me, I am sure that they have brought FLIR images into court to "WOW" the jury. The jury is about as clueless about FLIR as anyone, and all they can see is a big BLOTCH. Cop says BLOTCH is a grow op, jury believes cop, legal system fucks you once again.

Can anyone ID this type of chopper? They fly over, low, at least once a day. I live near a Marine Corps base and a Naval base. I know I'm probably just being paranoid, but they've never flown over my neighborhood so often before.
ch-53 i think. the pilots use night vision gogles to fly at night. no, FLIR.

Thanks. Had another chopper go by today. Got all freaked out because it was low. Walked outside and looked and low and behold, it was Marine One, the US President's chopper.

I really don't think I have to worry about Marine One. :-?

Still here. Heard another yesterday. He was uber low and traveling on a course that went right over my house.

Got up, ran to "the room" to open the closet and laughed out loud when I realized the temp in the closet was lower than the rest of the house. House was at 74, room was at 71. Heh.

In situations like that, do you guys think the individual lights would show up, even though the room temp is around the same as the rest of the house.

...and as I type this a county boy just drove down my street. Ug. Paranoia is not my friend.
