They usually don't investiagte unless they is a dramatic change. like $500 or so.. and then they will just send someone out to check the meters.. just make sure they aren't able to smell anything.
Usually when it gets above $1000 is when they start getting real suspicous

I don't mean to be rude but hes on his first grow and states no sources for the information hes giving you so why would you believe it? Simple fact is your not going to get a straight answer on this because 1. No power companies are the same. 2. There is no law stating a power company has to report high usage to the police, and why would they its bad business. 3. Very few bust are actually attributed to this so its hard to pin down around when this could happen.
Also keep in mind this is America with over 300Million residents, many of which try things like opening their own businesses from home, running servers, hell some are even actually growing tomatoes under those HIDs so be reasonable and think if your usage is actually anything that a million dollar power company is going to notice and do they have reason other then the usage schedule(Which I have my doubts they properly log because atleast on the east coast some of the providers are servicing many states meaning they would have to keep hour by hour records of 50+million people.) to think your growing marijuana. Also keep in mind that the few bust you do hear about over power usage are generally because someone was stealing the power and the power company as a business would be expected to do goes out to check what the issue is.
