Does this actually happen?

I have 2 rooms, one with a 600w and another with a 400w plus all the other equipment it uses afair amount of electric.

Now i was watching one of those cop tv shows last night and they busted someone "because the electrical company told the poice they were usong a high amount". although when they busted the grow the guy only had 1light.

This got me a little bit worried.

Any thoughts?

well i dont know about the states but in canada the hydro company is a company owned by someone...realistically what would they call the police and say..hey police someone is using a lot of our product that we sell you should make them stop....its not likely but you never know...one light is ridiculos i will have 3000w going plus everything else in the house like a few big screens and a few computers and about 14 chameleon cages going 12 on too....if you pay there shouldnt be a problem but a 400w or a 600w is like having 4 100w light bulbs on....my chandelier has 4 100w lights on...if i was in my dining room for 12 hours with it on its the same usage...no one would get arrested for that...be realistic

im pretty sure they are gonna need more against you then just the amount of power you are using.

lets say i don't grow anything, and 1 day i go out and buy a few space heaters because the heaters built in to the house just aren't warming up the house enough...is the power company gonna go running to the cops? id think not, but if they did they need more then just high electricity usage to get a search warrant.

I did think it was rubbish when i heard it, especially as the guy got done for electricity fraud as he had tapped in before the meter.

If that was so they wouldnt know how much was used, maybe just a scare tactic to any growers that maybe watching.:weed:

Someone on this forum posted an article about how the police have asked the power company to email them any residual customers that use over 4KW's per month. I believe this was out of Texas.

A grow house in the state of Washington was busted when the electric company informed to the police. The reason was not too much but too little. The house was empty and it was not using even the minimum amount of electric (hot water heater--fridge - etc). Seems these folks were using transformers tapped before the meter. Took down 300 plants there and another 500 at a second house given up by the caretaker of the first house after his arrest. That`s the only time I`ve heard of the power company getting involved.

Granted I know it's not in the best interest of a Power Company to rat out high usage customers, but what stopping mr. joe blow power company employee making mediocre wages from tipping you out to the hootas?

there has to be a pretty good investigation to nail you... peeps at the electric company dont just have a sheet that has your info that says lives alone, seldom goes out, has a 3 bedroom house, not a fish lover, doesnt do pottery, therefore must be growing pot..

they have a name and a bill..

im an electrician....believe me, your fine....now if you were using 6 400watters and 5 or 6 1000 watters plus heaters and your whole house ....then maybe you would have to worry.....

ya.. the way i look at it is that in the article they were lookin for peeps with 3-4 kwh a month. if you read and look at the pics of the place they raided.. it was a duplex, one story and so i am guessing one or two bedrroms.. if you are pulling 3-4 kwh a month out of 1 or 2 bedrooms.. that is a lot of juice.. had to be running like 4 or 5k easy

I have one of the lowest electric bills in my area. It could likley happen if the pigs wanted to keep an informant confidential. To pull your utility bills after the info was given.
