Dylann Roof Sentenced to Death for Charleston Church Shooting

I don't think Dylan Roof is evil. I think he's dumb white trash. He actually believes Neo-Nazi propaganda about the "statistical" rate at which black men are raping white women and committing crimes. I don't think that guy is smart enough to be true evil. I legitimately think he is stereotypical, dumb, bigoted, redneck white trash.
I'll take the objective view and say at the time, he was evil by his deed.

What somebody thinks cannot be known by others. We can only know what he did or said. Objectively he can be called evil by his deed. From what he said, he didn't think his act was evil. Can a person deliberately commit an evil act and not be evil because he didn't think it was?

This shit gives me a headache.

I don't support capital punishment by our government because the punishment is meted out unjustly. Lock him up and throw away the key. He might gain better understanding of what he did some day. I hope this torments him. For the rest of his life.

Point is two wrongs don't make a right.
Bury him under the jail.
Solitary confinement for the rest of his miserable life.
I get what you're saying, I do. Do you get the scope of this though?

10 wrongs. 10 deaths. 9 of which are on Roof.

33 federal charges on Roof.

I think stupid's just better. Evil kind of glorifies/exalts the act with an adjective. It denotes some kind of opposition. Like martyrdom. There was no real sensical point to the massacre besides the fact that he's obviously a propaganda glutton, and it takes real gullibility/stupidity to not be able to discern life for yourself, but through another person's ideology.

That was my point, anyway. Tomato, tomato, really.

I get it. The guy seems to be a real idiot. I mean completely stupid. @NLXSK1 level of stupid, maybe even worse. If a person can't understand right from wrong, then yeah, capital punishment for something they did is not something a civilized society should do. Not sure if it's even OK to punitively incarcerate somebody who is unable to understand right from wrong.

But I don't think that Dylan Roof or @NLXSK1 are unable to distinguish right from wrong. And so, punishment is merited.

Same here, in most cases. This isn't one of them.

It won't. He's sociopathic racist garbage. He'll sit in his cell, jacking off (with tweezers) while fingering his asshole, and giggling about the atrocities he committed.

Anyone need some barely used/slightly stained canvas Converse?
I get it. Roof is guilty beyond any question. I'm not caught up in a moral dilemma about "taking a life" or even a cost/benefit analysis. It's just that the judicial standard of "guilty beyond question" is not reliable. We know from DNA testing how unreliable the standard is. Also statistics show economic status and race is a factor in the application of capital punishment. And so, capital punishment isn't a just punishment in this society.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to shed tears for him when he's gone. Nor would I regret Cheney getting what he deserves for his war crimes. But that's not going to happen. Just saying. Life aint fair. I'd rather err on the side of eliminating capital punishment even for the people who unquestionably deserve it when innocent lives would also be taken. .

I say kill the piece of shit, he checks all three boxes.

1- absolutely guilty
2- heinous crimes
3- zero remorse

For those of you that say the death penalty costs too much, think about the thousands of cases every year that get pled out, simply by taking the death penalty off the table...I gotta think that offsets the cost of the expensive trials that do actually go to trial. Many times some serial rapist- murderer will only give up the locations of bodies if the DA takes the DP off the table, it's huge leverage.

Agreed. I used to be more of a proponent for the death penalty, but lately I find myself hoping for its deinstitutionalization. Still, I agree, if one were deserving, it would be him.

I've never found myself in that situation so idk how I would react.
A true buddhist would not take a life to protect theirs.
Actually, a true Buddhist shouldn't. At the heart of it, though, nothing matters except growth and love. Like, if you kill someone, you won't be condemned for eternity, but you should know that killing inhibits growth and eliminates a line of possibilities from this dimension of existence. And to harm another is to harm yourself and the Universe.

A true buddhist wouldn't even call themselves a buddhist.

I admire this.

I admire this, as well. What about unprovoked/unmerited violence directed at you (and yours), though? Would you respond in turn or activate armadillo/turtle mode?

Just curious.
Fight or flight? Again never been in that situation and hopefully never will be.

Again, a true Buddhist knows it doesn't matter. What matters is walking the path, loving and growing.

I am somewhere between a Buddhist, a Hindu, and a Shaman. I use Ayahuasca as a religious sacrament. I believe we are all facets of God/the Universe. I believe we continue to be reborn until we learn all the lessons our soul has to learn to reintegrate with the Universe. God is the genderless, formless energy and collective unconscious of the Universe.

Meditation can be used to achieve the same transcendental state as Ayahuasca.
