Cooler water is capable of holding on to more oxygen than warmer water. So when a nutrient solution starts to warm up, its ‘hold’ on dissolved oxygen decreases. For example, the oxygen content of a fully aerated solution 68°F (20°C) is around 9ppm, whereas at 86°F (30°C), it drops by over 16% to 7.5ppm.
thats from the article ,so i thought i can get a meter and test it out with different setups like airstone,just a water pump or something else and see were im getting to the limit and anything above that is just a waste,has anyone ever seen a grow using a needle wheel pump

yes i am intrigued with these pumps you speak of but the only problem is I use a dual diaphram aire pump for redundancy,
if one of the diaphrams goes out the other one keeps pumping air to your plants till you can get there and replace the diaphram. if all you have is a water pump for air, you will need to have 2 running to make sure you dont lose a crop to equpment breakdown
or do they sell a redundant one?

I have run the those particular needle wheel pumps 24/7 for over two years without failure. I keep live salt water rref tanks and they are worth more than a crop. I do not risk my corals to shoddy pumps. The needle wheels wear and the bubble sizes increase after about a year but the new wheel cost about $6. The smaller the bubbles the more surface area for the given amount of air. For an example wooden air diffusers used with an air pumps put out much smaller bubbles and oxygenate the water more than standard air stones or wands, However the wood air stones clog up quickly. The needle wheel pump does not clog like wooden air diffusers.
The more surface area the larger amount of air interface surface for oxygen transfer. Therefore more DO and the water is well circulated at the same time. And as the bubbles are small when they burst at the surface they do not cause as much salt spray. If you are concerned abi out heat from the pump they make external needle pumps as well.
If your really worried about break downs then you should be more worried about a power outage. They sell back up air pumps that run on batteries for power outage back ups.
The smart thing to do with any pump is pull it before it breaks and replace it. I now replace all my pumps on a one year basis after having a top name brand pump fail after only 8 months. They replaced the pump for free but it was scary to see part of my water outlets in one of my reef tank pushing water. Luckily it was a three pump system, so no harm done. It was an Iwaki $580 pump that failed.
What is $50 or $60 once a year for a small pump considering the value of the product your growing. The eraly pulled pump can always be kept as a temporary back up pump. If you replace your halide/HPS bulbs when they are still working then you can do the same with pumps.

There are also those on this forum using high pressure aero systems and air atomizer systems that work better than any DWC, Bubbleponics, conventional hydro, or low or medium pressure aero systems, yet few on this forum have seen one or or owned one. Mn any people have never even heard of high pressure chmaber aerosystems or air atomizer chamber aero systems. The commercial versions of the air atomizer systems were called atomix. They were extremely nice but very expensin ve and only sold in the UK. They sold out to a U>S. company but are not yet in production here. Ob ver three thousand each for a syten 1 meter square. For a DWC I would suggest the needle wheel for circulation and increasing the waters DO, as it will work better than an air pumps and air stones. If your worried about a failure then add a small airpump and stone as a back up. Be ware though that if there are any organic oils in the water they will adhere to the bubbles and float to the surface and form a foam layer. That is one reason that many people do not use organic nutrients with air stones. If your using chemical based nutrients and get a foam on the surface it has to be coing for root mattrer that has died and is breaking down in the water. There are no oils in chen mical nutrients.
