downsides to COLD drying (40F)

This winter It will be cold as a witches crotch in my garage and i'm wondering what the downside of a COLD, dry environment is. Mainly I am concerned with the plant doing whatever it does during the dry to keep its smell (chlorophyll break down etc). Will the plant continue doing whatever it needs to do to keep a dank smell at that low of a temperature? Sure would make my popcorn drying a lot less....involved.

I understand it will take a long while to dry at this temperature, thats not really a big deal to me.

Input appreciated.

Hey Mon thats great, mon normaly use A/C and keep room cold for about 14 days, IMO the longer it dries and most slowly it can be dried and cold cured this way. Just make sure you have LOTS of fans and good airflow if its a big or decent crop to keep the mold away......Keep yer PIMP HAND STRONG

Cold and low humidity go hand in hand. The cold isn't a problem per say, in fact one of the benefits of a cold environment is it reduces the chance of mold, however if the humidity is to low the buds will take longer to cure (if they can cure at all). I try to follow the 70/70 rules which is to keep buds at seventy degrees Fahrenheit with seventy percent relative humidity. This is my curing range, but when I'm ready to smoke I bring it down further to 50%-55% RH and for long term storage I go even lower at 45% RH.

Simon D in his Perfect Cure method advocates keeping the buds in the 60%-65% RH range for proper curing. I don't believe he mention anything the ambient temperature. So with all that said, I think you'll be okay so long as you can bring the relative humidity level up and keep it around 60%-70%. This might require using humidifiers or it may simply be that you jar them up a little sooner and keep them jars for a little longer.

Hope this helps,

- Vin

From everything I read, light degrades THC. Some ambient light would be somewhat acceptable, but no direct light (natural or otherwise).

One time I left branches hanging on a clothes line and forgot about them for a few days. When I checked on them they were yellow like dead grass.

I have mine in a back basement room stuffed pillows in the window to insulate somewhat.. the humidity has been a steady 45% down here but the temperature gets down to 50 - 55.. I run a little heater behind the fan and it brings the temperature up.. they smell good.. I grew these sticky White Widow monsters in mostly 60° degrees so I don't think a little chill while drying will hurt them and the heater will only dry them fast.. let it ride
