What caused this? Both leaves on the same node are like this.
It's a trainwreck seedling.

I have a plant like that now, I was watering the other day a noticed a big fan leaf with a leaf just like that. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing, if any thing it might be a good thing.

its nothing that important and nothing you have control over. Somewhere in the genetics of the plant there is a mutation. this isn't necisarily a bad thing it just is. could be for the better. it could be from a some what deteriated seed. Its just genetics a roll of the dice. If it wasn't and F1 seed and you got it from a buddies grow its probably just been crossed with something that brought out this genetic trait. i've had plants auto top them selves and just start growing two main branches. i like to think of it as a neat lil qwuirk. the first plant i grew auto topped. and the bud was awesome. i called that shit the twin towers, i know insensitive, but that shit hit hard as a plane. call it two face or something :p it might just blow ur face off

It is a seed I got from a friend's grow... and funny you mention auto topping because one of the other seedlings from the same batch of seeds is starting to grow two main branches, I though I somehow damaged the main growth tip... Thats something I will look into.

did your friend have a male plant in the mix or was it a hermie? if it was a male plant the smart money is it was crossed with a weaker strain or crossed with a strain that brought out ODD phenotypes.

If it was a hermie, oh no, the smart money is on inbreeding. same as with humans. hermies spread undesireable traits. especially since the pollen gentics and the female gentics are identical its going to continually weed out the recessive genes and from what your saying i think its safe to say that its bringing out undesirable traits.

but again genetics is a roll of a dice when your breeding without knowing the phenotypes of each and which are dom and which are resessive.

Lots of mutations are beneficial to the plant, in today's type of evolution it is mostly directed. That's why we have such killer buds.. If it grows up to be a female I would keep it as a mother somewhere, find a male with the same mutation and seed her. It may end up being one of the strongest and healthiest plants you've had. Maybe it'll grow faster or bigger cause of the mutation. Maybe the buds will be bigger, or harder.. then again, maybe it'll just be a regular plant with a fucked up mutation.. Either way, nothing to worry about :)

your forgetting the third option. it could bring out undesirable traits such as low thc production, smaller buds, less bud sites. with out research and experimenting with the plant by taking clones and seeing what the stable phenotypes develop, it just a guess. you never know...

I think I will experiment, since I have nothing to loose. I'll take clones in a few weeks and see how they progress. And I'll keep you updated.
