I figured with the spectrum spread with a 3000k and a 4000k you won't have to worry about adding blues or reds. Maybe throw some uv in there towards the end.

to achieve that mix you would want to mix 5K with 3K, however its really hard to beat adding a little bit of royal blues, UVA and deep reds to a 3K or 3.5K

Have you tried dimming with a potentiometer ? I've been wondering if you have to use the 12V aux, or if pot works straight onto dim+ and dim- , like the meanwells.

Spec sheet to me looks like it has info going both ways :confused:

I'm just finishing my first build. 12 Vero 29's, 6 of them 3000k, 6 of them 4000k. I'm going to be running them with 3 of these.

Hey guys,
been reading LED threads for a long time, but still having issues with electricity part, hope someone could help.
I've bought 1 Cree CXA 3070 and 1 Cree CXA 2540 (just because both quite cheap). Initially planned to run 3070 with 1750ma driver or higher and 2540 with separate 1400ma.
But found very good deal for Meanwell HLG-185H-C1400A driver. I know it can handle up to 4 COBs, but is it possible to run 2 different COBs in series ?
Cree PCT calc gives me the following data:
CXA3070 1400ma Vf=37.48
CXA2540 1400ma Vf=38.12

I don't have any idea how driver will react on this. Do i need to solder something in between to equalize them somehow?

Nothing special needed. Balanced/same chips on a single string is not necessary. As long as the total Vf on the strings is lower than the drivers maximum and higher than its minimum voltage...doesn't matter what the string consist of to the driver.

What you might have an issue with, or at least cutting it close based at a quick glance...is the lower end of the voltage range with only 2 COBs on it. If you dim it...you might not have enough voltage. So check the PCT for lower currents and make sure it's more than 71V total total on the string no matter what current you dim to.

Worst case..get one more cxa and never worry.

voltage limit should not be a problem, as it's below 71 only when driver's fully dimmed to 700ma, i'll won't drive them that low.
But i think I'll buy 1 more 2540 if the 1st won't have any cooling issues on 1400ma

- According to CREE's PCT; under 450mA CXA3070 are mre efficient than CXB3070 (for equal bins). So you might as well get CXA if you can find them for cheaper ..

- You can probably make something as efficient, but cheaper using CXB3590 (~half as many for similar efficiency and amount of light)

450 ma is a really low current to be running at. for 3070s seems silly to be under 700ma. just my humble opinion.

kind of like buying a Porsche, and then installing an rpm limiter around 2500, to save gas.

just an analogy of how its used, I don't think a 3070 is like a Porsche :)
Bad analogy. General idea behind LEDs is to have more efficient light and that's exactly what you do by running them soft. If you can bear the expense of it...

On the other hand, rpm limiter doesn't make a Porsche go any faster. You don't buy a Porsche to save gas.

but that's the point the rev limiter is like running a cree cob extra soft, for higher efficieny.

maybe a better analogy would be comparing a cree cob to a Cadillac, priced high and designed to be a great COB. well lets run that Cadillac at idle cause it saves gas ....

keep in mind I was commenting at running cree cobbs at 450ma as opposed to 700ma or higher for a light engine that was designed for 1900ma

As I'm in a tent with limited head room and want the best spread to create an even canopy I wanted to more cobs and run them soft, same idea as using mono chips lots of them spread out to create an even canopy. Does anyone know if there is a meanwell driver at that low of a current?
