DIY aero cloner

Nice. Okay so I want them in my tent because I can run my humidifier in there and I didn’t really want to set up a separate environment because of limited space.

I did my last batch of clones with roottech gel in coir/vermiculite under the 120 watts of 3000k cobs I had in there before. There was no additional heat in there and two clones failed to root after two weeks. The rest of them did root and are growing fine, but I think the 120 watts of cob light was definitely too intense. Some weird stuff happened to the leaves. I couldn’t turn those cobs down because they were straight from Lowe’s running off of 110v light sockets. I’ve since built those cobs into a different light on a dimmable driver, which also has two of the same boards, and is currently in the tent, but I’m going to be shutting down my HPS and using the board/cob light for flowering as soon as I build the single board light. I’m just waiting on the board and driver which are coming in Tuesday.

Anyway I don’t want to set up another controlled space for clones, because I’m running pretty low on space as it is. I either have to do it in the tent under the board or I have to set up a small environment for them that will be hard to make room for. Will it hurt to just turn the board down while the roots are getting established?

As for temperature, the ambient temps get pretty low in my grow room because I don’t have a heater in there, which is something I have to consider when I switch to flowering under the LEDs. Ambient temps in that room get down into the 50s at night, so I will have to get a mat to heat the water up to 70
You might get away with turning board down and keeping them very far away. Do you have a lux meter by chance? Do you have fans in the tent? No fans or air blowing on the clones or they will wilt. I don't buy the high temp needed for LED at least for quantums. I run them alone in one of my genetic test tents and temp never gets above 75 in there since it's in my lung room for other 3 rooms(hps and qbs combined rooms) and there beautiful healthy girls. I find nutrient levels effect plants more under QBs when transitioning into bloom to keep them thriving then temps. I fell for the high temp needed for LED people promote but after using them I don't believe in that theory anymore but some do and whatever works for them or you or me I say just stick with it and keep everything simple. I've ran my water down to 65f before with ambient around 68f with no issues besides taking extra day or 2. Out of all the years I've used aerocloner I've only lost 1 clone out of hundreds and hundreds(probably thousands).

Yeah I was thinking 30gph might be a little low. I was planning on plumbing it like my evaporative cooler — instead of a manifold, the riser off the pump goes into a single tee and the pipe runs in a square around the inside of the bucket/tub. It just seems like this will get a better spread around the bucket, although a 4 way manifold will probably work well too. I wasn’t planning on spending a bunch of money on this, but I’ve got some time and I’m done buying stuff for my light builds so I probably will wait and get a good 50-60gph magnetic drive pump — probably put a ball valve on it too so I can dial in the spray. I’m thinking it might be nice to do this in a 20 quart black storage tub if I can find one made of sturdy enough plastic. I think I saw some good black and yellow ones at Costco.
Exactly.. a manifold. That's exactly what I was invisioning

My plan was to use RO water, but I do not know the best water to use. The room is pretty cool so I should get a heat mat for it as well, but keeping it warm won’t be an issue in warmer months. The cloner will be in my 3x3 veg tent under a 288 diode board with 3000k Samsung lm310b chips on a HLG-120h-54a driver. I made this thread because I don’t know everything and I appreciate you asking these questions. I can already see that there’s more to it than just hooking up a pump to spray water on your cuttings.
I've always used just ro. Not ph d. Just straight

That light is to bright, buy a cheap 20w fluorescent from Lowes and hang it foot above top of clones, perfect light. RO water will work but I'd use Clear Rez to keep it clean and Clonex liquid as a food source, use them both as directed on bottle per amount of water in your cloner. Temp wise you want the water to be cooler not warm. 70-72f will be good water temp, cheap fish aquarium thermometer works but if not when the water sprays your hand it should feel cool no warmth at all. Anything over 80f will promote bad stuff to grow in water causing slime or brown roots. Ambient temp anywhere between 68-78f will work but water temp in cloner needs to stay in range i recommended. Let me know if you need any more info
I agree. There's nothing like a low wattage 4000K flouro for clones. It just works.

The only fan I have in my tent is a computer fan in a duct port to keep air moving through it. Maybe I should just put a foot cfl in a hanging socket and build a humidity dome over this thing. If my LEDs are too intense I might as well. Anyway I just went ahead and ordered this pump. Looks like it will do what I need and it’s a lot cheaper than a mag drive pond pump. This pump looks decent.

I’m stopping by Lowe’s on the way home for a container and some plumbing.

As to the other guy who’s bashing DIY, well, I enjoy it, and I take pride in my work, and since I don’t half ass anything it all comes out nice. I’m like a pot smoking, deadhead Ron Swanson.

Cancel that order right now. You'll need no more than 100GPH MAX for a cloner manifold in a 5gal, Bruv.

I told you to try the 30GPH. You can absolutely make that one work you'll just only be able to use maybe 1 or 2 spray heads in the square manifold rather than several. Which is better anyways you're not trying to soak them.
To make life easier though, DO BUY the small DIG brand Hole puncher they make for their drip irrigation fittings. Makes the PERFECT SIZED hole for this sprayheads to thread right into.

And if you haven't already, order 10-20' of 1/2" hydro black vinyl tubing and a bag of tees and elbows to build your manifold. You'll need 3 tees and 4 elbows.

You only are going to want maybe 4" of water in your bucket for the whole time it runs until roots. Don't change it either

I got that one because it’s adjustable and I might go bigger than 5 gallon. 210gph is just its absolute max. I’m thinking about making one out of a 10 gallon rectangular tub. Just depends on what I find when I get to the store. Back when I was much younger I was a professional aquatic garden tech. I hooked up pumps and ran pond plumbing for a living. I always liked to do overpowered pumps with flow control because more powerful pumps are just generally better.

Why not PVC, just out of curiosity? I can get black vinyl at Lowe’s but I wanted something rigid.

You can use pvc but there's just a lot more ease with vinyl. And you can not get the stuff I'm talking about at Lowe's. 9/10 I've ordered it, it's been HydroFarm brand.

Awww that's a bunch of phooey. I've cloned in a DIY bucket for years.
The problem is that the containers off the shelf in most places will cause leaks. I made DIY for years in another country where they had better containers, but in America everything I could find would leak out the top unless you installed rubber striping, which is silly when you can buy one for like $100.

Well if I can build a watertight one for half that and enjoy the challenge then why not? Like I said I take my time and build shit right. I do custom remodeling for a living and building stuff truly is my life. Anyway I just wasted an hour at Lowe’s. Shitty service and there were no lids for the perfect container, which is the Commander 5 gallon rectangular bucket. Not quite as tall as the square one. I’m going to a different store tomorrow to pick it up but I’m also following up on the shitty experiences I had at the other store with two separate department managers being unhelpful rude fuckfaces. I smell a gift card once I get in touch with the higher ups.

Anyway I’m gonna use PVC because it’s dirt cheap and I have all the stuff to cut and glue it easily. I have a pair of pipe shears so cutting it is no trouble. I had all the shit gathered up to buy but I dropped it in the middle of the aisle in frustration after having an hour of my time wasted. I’ll just have to try again tomorrow at a different store.

Bruh.... Buckets have an ez peel off lid that's PLENTY water tight. That's why we use em. And it's especially why I reccomended to the OP to run to Lowe's for their SQUARE 5Gal bucket that comes with that same style lid as almost all other 5gal buckets use. It's just square, so a lot more uniformity when cutting out sites for clone collars.
