Decorative Pebbles

Hey everyone at RIU I'm attempting to use a different material for a medium and need to ask a question can I wash these stones and use? They are black

I have no idea.Why not just use the right stuff?

Looks heavy, and sharp. Aquarium stone?
Regardless, you'll have to wash it, if you see dye it's unusable.

I've used decorative pebbles, marbles, red barbecue lava, pumice. It all works if no bleedable dyes. Lava and pumice MUST be rinsed very well before using.

set it in plain water for 48 hours - if color bleeds into the water - I'd say no as this is a consumable.

I've found aquarium supplies are safe to use. Never found dyes or anything weird. However the size, shape, weight and performance of hydroton make it hard to beat.

Would haven't the coin at the moment and cutting is getting bigger needed something in a hurry so thought to try this guess better wait thanks for response Myke

Thanks Hugo not aquarium stones decorative from dollar general rinsed and just dust washed off they're small thought might be usable I will wait and get right stuff I guess

True I like hydroton this was just a quick fix temp like but guess I should wait thanks for response

I did a little checking and it is being sold as aquarium stone, if it's only temporary and you're not using much - go for it. But IMO, replace it with hydroton when you can.

Dang just read this, I too have used decorative glass in a hempy like veg container and that's worked just was concerned about these. Thought to use black to avoid algea growth. Would this be airy enough for the roots?

No idea really. I believe the roots would make it through, but might take some time

So in Struth marbles work because there's larger air pockets right? So my better option would be to mix with perlite as a stabalizer for root system, maybe I'll try that because the small perlite let's stalk float so thanks for input

sorry Hugo conversations are only when active. I was wondering if anyone has used the coconut hairs like this for layering in their hempy grow
