connecting square fans to tubing

I am trying to help a friend build a micro cab on the cheap. He has a decent fan but I can't figure out a good way to mount it and connect the air tube without the system leaking. Anybody found a great way to do this?

Box stores? like cardboard boxes? I've decided to use disposable tupperware to create a fitting. cut a hole out of the bottom, and seal the open end around the fan. i s'pose i could just use duct tape, but that's too easy. looks like crap too. im also gonna try and talk him into a small squirrel cage fan, but it's a very stealthy grow so it'll have to fit inside the box.

You know, none of the box stores in my area carry any flanges for duct work! it's getting old fast.

Where are you looking? 3" is a standard duct size used for bathroom venting. You can get 3" round to square adapters at Home Depot. They will be near bathroom exhaust fans as that is there primary use.

none of the 4 home depots local to me carry round to square ducting, or any other fitted flanges for that matter.

I've bought white PVC round to square adapters at Home Depot, I think they even may have had them in galvanized as well. Maybe they no longer stock them. A little cutting and bending should be possible though, and of course there is always duct tape, it is meant for this purpose (duct work) after all.

dont have pics atm, but it's pretty simple. i just used a disposable tupperware from the store. cut a 4" hole in the bottom, and one in the lid. mounted the lid with the fan on the exhaust port, and duct taped the filter with it's rubber extender to the bottom of the tupperware. popped the whole thing over the fan and onto the lid, and used some silicone where it needed it. suspended the whole filter with 12 gauge metal wire. done deal.
