Coconut Fiber as soil?

Hello,

I'm going to try out my first grow this week and was wondering if I could use coconut fiber as my medium? I have a brick of it that is compressed and you just add water to it and it expands and retains water real good. It's the kind for pets like lizards etc. Made by Zoomed. It's all organic and looks good to me. Any ideas or if anyone has tried coconut fiber?

EDIT: Also, I have some non namebrand soil that I have in my garage collecting dust. Should I mix the fiber with the soil or just use the soil by itself?

Thanks!

welcome to the forum. Coco coir is fine all by itself. If you mixed coco with soil that would work also. The coco would replace perlite, vermiculite mixture commonly recommended for soil. VV

Ah shit, sweet. I'm gonna try a mixture of soil on the bottom...Coco in the middle to keep the roots moist and soil on the top. Any ideas if this is a good idea? or would it rot the roots if I kept the roots constantly moist?

EDIT: On the soil it's SCOTTS potting soil. Has enough to feed the plant for 4 months. Would this be a good soil?

I use 90% coco with 10% perlite mixed in. I swear by it. Also, get nutrients that are made for coco, such as Canadian Xpress.

sounds like a lot of work, no benefit. If you are going to use them together just mix them all together. Layering is not necessary. The scotts soil will be fine. The nutes won't last four months under the conditions you will be creating. Plan on starting to give them nutes @ 1/4 strength about two weeks after they break the soil. If you are going to layer anything, layer sand on top, about 1/2". It will stop the fungus knats from breeding in your pots later. VV
