Cloning: How big can the clone be?

Let's say one has a plant that needs to stay in veg longer, and whose length needs to be controlled.

I've read several on-line cloning guides. While they state a minimum size/length, they do not indicate a maximum clone size.

The main cola on the plant needs to be knocked back a good six inches, in order for the understory to grow out (there was a bad run in January where a massive spidermite infestation and two days of severe underwatering set her back a little).

If one were to top a six-inch piece, can it be successfully cloned?

i gather this means a larger clone will re-root and potentially grow faster than a smaller clone?

Not necessarily. Plants grow at the rate they are comfortable with.
It just means it will be bigger simply for the fact that it already has more size then a clone.

I think it's generally easier to clone a smaller plant because the stem is supple and there is less vegetation the plant has to keep watered so it can concentrate more on growing roots. You can definately clone a larger peice but it's only bigger because it was vegged before it was cloned. If you just cloned it and vegged it for the same length the plant would be the same size perhaps bigger because it can root faster.

I've seen the older tops actually seem to root better. The ones I've done always have.

best of luck :leaf:

I want to clone the top when I cut at line 2 - is that too big? It is a Holy Smoke Walawi landrace sativa.

Thanks,

If it's really big, you can always just cut it into two clones. I tend to think smaller clones are better, since they don't have a root system yet, the less material needs to be supported until the roots come along, the better.

yeah, I agree. I'd cut at #2 and strip the growth from that next node up down to the cut to expose the rooting area to the hormone.

that's how I do it anyway

good luck
