Experienced seed growers please help

This is my fifth grow with clones from my mother plant, all is going extreamly well and recieving some great smoke.

So I decided to order some seeds to have variety in my grows. I got Blue Cheese, Magic Bud, White Widow and White Rhino feminized seeds.

I soaked them for 24 hours in ph'd mineral water with a drop of superthrive then in to tissue.
In 24 hours they all germinated, they were then placed in jiffy pots (the same I use for my clones). The jiffy's were placed in my clone dome with a heat pad under them and a 8w flouro above.
All but the Magic Bud Sprouted within 24 hours. So far all looks good to me.

2 days later they went into the mother room which has a 125w cfl, 3 feet from the seedlings. Any closer and they were'nt happy.
6 days have now passed and they look the same (pics). Stretched and stressed!

What the hell? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

A key to the pics...
The first 4 are my seedlings
The next my mother plant with 4 happy clones at the bottom
The 6th is my veg room with 3 nearly ready for flower
The last has 4 four week budding beauties.

and maybe add a lil breeze

I had the light closer and they very much didnt like it, although I am moving it closer day by day.
I also have had a fan in the room for circ.
Cheers though

You should put some soil around that naked stem of your seedling, so theres only about an inch coming out from the top.

they don't need to be in the humidity dome and put em right up close to the light, those babies are a little stretched but there's no reason they wont be great smoke. just bury the peat jiffy and stem up to about an inch n half from the first 2 leaves n your good to go!

good luck

I've wondered about doing that. Have you done it before?
I'm just worried that I will hurt the stem?!?!
Not that I would know, just looking for reasurance.
Thanks BongJ

Well thats two for the stem burial! Im gonna do it!
Cheers heaps

It's fine to bury the stem. The buried stem then becomes part of the taproot and gives a much more stable root.

I've done it before and it's beneficial to the plant, it doesn't harm it at all.

It's much better than having stretched seedlings.

You shouldn't need a humidity dome for seedlings, so take it off, get some air movement which will strengthen the stems and pull the light closer if you can so they don't stretch anymore.

You said the plants 'didn't seem to like' the light being close, but I'm not sure what you mean by that.

When I first put them in the mother room the light was approx 10 inches away, they promptly keeled over in the space of about half an hour.
I figured it was too hot as the same thing has happened in the past with clones.
With the clones, I would raise the light and give them 24 hours and they would recover and be ready for more.

Buring the stem is quite normal. I do it everytime I transplant.
I transplant 4-5 times before they reach their final destination.
By the time they reach blooming stage, I've buried at least 6-10 inches of stem.

Make sure you put a dome over your seedlings until they've grown at least 2 sets of true leaves.
Seedlings need as much humidity as you can supply.

seedlings don't need a dome or as much humidity as possible, clones do as they have no root system to take up water through hence misting the leaves and the dome so they absorb water through the leaves a seedling has a tap root and will suck water up through it.:joint:

I'm not gonna get in a debate about this.
Seedlings, and clones need humidity.

But I'll tell you what I'm gonna do.
I have some Kush seeds that I've been wanting to germinate.
Once they have sprouted I'll put a half dozen under a dome and
the other half dozen without, just to see if there's a difference.
I'll even make a thread and show pics on what happends.

Fair enough?

fine with me man im just going off my experience as im sure you are. if putting seedlings under a diome makes them grow faster/ better id be interested in seeing!

Give me a few days to get it set up.
I already have a perpetual grow going on right now where I harvest every 2 weeks.
Im gonna have to time it right so I can put the kush right into the cycle, without fucking up my perpetual grow.

I'm kind of excited about doing this test.
I already have 5 moms. But 6 sounds better than 5.
I have Northern Lights, AK47, Mango, Grand Daddy Purple, and Oasis.

that's a good line up bongjuice i used to get oasis from a dealer a couple of years back really nice balanced smoke.

timing your perpetual makes us all alot more organised than our stoner arses usually are eh hahaha

the only reason i generally dont bother using a dome for seedlings is i have my vegging clones in the same cupbaord n the prop is a bit big. but ive been thinking about getting another tent for the job if this test proves the theory it may be just the kicker i need!:joint:

Here's the deal as I see it;

1) Chuck the jiffy pucks. They work alright for clones but, from my experience, they're a bit too sterile for seeds. Get ya some good potting soil and 4 or 8oz cups.

2) Humidity domes and heating pads are for clones also. Don't use them.

3) Get a 2 bulb set of 2' F20 or 4' F40 flouros. Gro-Lux or 6500k daylight.

Germinate your seeds and fill your cups a 1/4" from the top with soil. Plant your seeds and soak with a mist sprayer. Put the flouros 1/2" above the soil. Resoak every 8hrs. Put your cups on a nice reflective cookie sheet, makes it easy to slide out and water. Let em grow right up to the bulb before you move the light up but, always within 1/2" of the leaves.

Just my opinion.

90%+ success from germ to flower.
