Cheese #1 - Pure Exodus Genetics - Kaliman Seeds - Test/Seed Grow

The story behind these seeds are straight from the breeder rockster who tells how he came up with these seeds.

Rockster lives in U.K. and has an original Cheese #1 Exodus Cut of the original Skunk genetics Arjan brought over.
After many years of cloning from Mothers with nothing odd occuring all of a sudden he ends up with TWO males from a batch of clones.

He doesn't know why or how - just that he is sure they were cut from his Exodus Mother.
Apparently this is not unheard of; but is very rare none the less.
My hypothesis is that certain conditions have to align to gether to make it happen, and rockster just hit that sweet spot accidentally.

At any rate, rockster had the good sense to grow them out and choose one of the males and breed them with the females.
A side note: he said the other females from that batch of clones were normal and uniform.

These seeds are the result of his efforts, and are especially valued as this is a Breeders Pak of the new line.
And that is what I intend to do with them: breed.

Here is the unopened seedpak:
c1-seedpak.jpg

Seal cut and five of ten seeds selected:
c1-seeds.jpg

Pots prepared for run;
I drilled five 7/16" diameter holes in bottom of each quart container,
filled them with medium, and then set seeds in pre-wetted depressions:
c1-veg-00-t.jpg

After covering plantings with loose medium and
adding a few ounces of water to try and saturate soil without disturbing seeds,
I then sprayed the upper surface of medium with aged pHed water to wet down
in order to trap moisture.
c1-veg-01-s.jpg

Normally I put on heated surface for a day or two after sowing seeds.
This setup is still pretty wet so I will wait until morning to place pots on heat source.

I am using fresh Pro-Mix BX for medium and will start and veg under 2X overdriven T-8's
Normally I veg 30 days before flipping for my tests.
Normally I repot two times:
a week to ten days for first transplant,
and just before placing in bloom room at 30 days.
I expect to go to 2 gal pots and then finish in 7 gal pots.

More later....

Okay it's two days and I set the pots on top of my 'heat source', :-(
to do my thing like I do my thing:
c1-veg-03.jpg

After @5 hours I pulled them off and set them down below in the light.
The idea is to just warm the soil somewhat from the bottom upward.

You don't want to 'cook' it; you are trying to simulate the ground warming in the Spring to trigger the grow reflex.
Or something like that.
I go by feel here and that's the best I can explain it.
It has worked great for me up to now; so we will see.

The plan going forward here is some seedlings in a day or two sprouting up.

Okay I am at day 3 since sowing seeds and I have ignition on three of the five so far.

I set the warmed pots about a foot or so from the veg light yesterday afternoon:
c1-veg-03-s.jpg

Today I have something to show for the effort:
c1-veg-03-t.jpg
#One, #Three, and #Four have sprouted.
#Two has also sprouted.
Just went down to check before lights out:
#5 has sprouted.

5 for 5 man.
Hope this is a good sign.
more later....

Okay all 5 are coming up normal, and I have moved them closer to the light.
c1-veg-04.jpg

I'm now about 4 or 5 inches below 2x overdriven T-8's (same as T-5 HO lumen output).
But I am going to have to make arrangements to give them light while the plants behind them sleep.
So for a week or two I am going to have to shuttle them in and out of the good light just to keep the light cycles proper.

I want to point out that I have not watered them again since sowing.
A lot of people drown seedlings at this point. Including me.
My friend finally got me to accept: Little plant = little water.

I'm not trying to come off as a know it all, I sure aint one;
I'm just trying to make this grow as simple to understand as possible for a newbie to follow along.
I hope I don't screw this up because that would be embarrassing as hell man.
But whatever happens I will share the journey with you if you care to tag along.:weed:

I'm back with a couple pics and to report that all is going well with this test to date.

I'm getting ready to transplant the seedlings now and wanted to get this journal up to date.

At 5 days veg:
c1-veg-05t.jpgc1-veg-05s.jpg

I can pretty much see a definate runt and a maybe runt so far.
I did note that the first to pop through the medium is the runt for what it's worth.

10 days veg:
c1-veg-10t.jpgc1-veg-10s.jpg

Starting to look like plants even though they just got back the veg light to themselves.
Up to yesterday they were sharing space with three others in bloom for some seeds I'm making.
I was taking them out of that room at night and giving them longer light with a lower watt setup.

Just a quick note about the coffee container pots I made:
They work fine for starting the seed and drian perfect with the holes I drilled in them.
But now I have to cut the top parts of them off to get the seedlings out for transplanting without disturbing them too much.
I got a razor knife for the job; but I wish I would have thought of this first.

So far I've fed them water twice at around 5 days and 10 days.

Now that the Cheese #1 has the veg room to itself it is time to get down to business.
All 5 seedlings appear healthy even though one lags the others noticeably.
Before transplant:
c1-veg-12.jpg

After transplant:
c1-veg-12tp.jpg

I used @ 2 quarts of mixed nutes Bonide Root-n-Grow at half-strength for each plant for the transplant.
I just peeked in this morning and they all look real happy so all went well.

Here are pics of each plant 12 days after sprouting and 15 days after sowing the seeds:

Number One:
c101-veg-12.jpg

Number Two:

Number Three:
c103-veg-12.jpg

Number Four:
c104-veg-12.jpg

Number Five:
c105-veg-12.jpg

I heard and read that this strain is sensitive to nutes.
So far so good. Fingers crossed.

All went well with the transplanting and the seedlings have responded well to to light nutes.
Today I decided to try and even out the 'canopy' with a couple bricks, etc.

16 days veg:
c1-veg-16.jpg

Next feeding I will give them some way-back-machine Rap-id Gro "Grow" formula.
I want to get some micronutrients in the soil, and it's high in nitrogen.

WooHoo!
Everything is looking great and I have high hopes for these.
I started out a bit leery because of the nute sensitivity issue; but so far I don't see it.

Hit them with the Rap-id Gro 'grow' formula @ 20 days and they responded well.

c105-veg-20.jpgc104-veg-20.jpgc103-veg-20.jpgc102-veg-20.jpgc101-veg-20.jpg

c101-veg-22.jpgc102-veg-22.jpgc103-veg-22.jpgc104-veg-22.jpgc105-veg-22.jpg

I did a little foilar feed last night with grow nutes and will transplant to 5 gallon pots tonight.

Well I transplanted this morning into 5 gallon pots.
All went fine, and they are sleeping it off now.

Each plant had good root development showing when I pulled them.
It had been 13 days since the first transplant; so I'm real happy with that.

Here's a couple group shots before the transplants:

And one of the group in veg after transplant:

I decided to FIM them today seeing as I got to hold off for bloom a couple more weeks.

I have noticed a 'problem' possibly with this strain:
The fan leaves grow out over the lower growth and stunts them it appears.
That in itself is no big deal if during the stretch they get some room to move.
But I think that is the cause of this wierdness on Number 1:
c101-veg-25-mutation.jpg

That's the only part looking like that; but others are sporting a twisted leave or two.
This is the runt plant; so maybe it's just not meant to be.
I left it on there for now - see what happens I suppose.

So I topped each plant at the same point on stems and stuck in cloner for ride across town:
c1-veg-25-clones.jpg
Friend just got card and loves the cheese; so these are in good hands while I sort out the seedlings.
We plugged it into his inverter in his van; so he has a rolling garden 'til he makes it home.:-P
I put a little Root & Grow in the cloner this time thinking maybe they will stay greener on fan leaves during rooting.
As long as I don't have to listen to that thing for the next two weeks I'm a happy camper.
I love my cloner but the noise bugs me.

So anyway, as you can infer from the tops above, these plants are almost identical except for height and the one with the mutated branch.
I'm hopeful the FIM, (what is FIM? - FIM = "fuck I missed" It is a method of increasing production by topping to get a more even canopy),
will give the other branches adequate lighting now. Be easier to watch the mutant if nothing else.

Here is a group shot after FIM:

Hey all, it's been almost 2 weeks since I FIM-topped the plants and all is going well so far.
Here is a group shot of the girls out for a stroll:
c1-veg-37a.jpg
They are all filling out sideways real nice, and main stems are about 7/16" thick.
The tallest one is almost 12 inches, smallest is about 9 inches.

I have not seen any pre-sex indicators yet; so that's a good sign.
I see some feeder roots getting air-trimmed at bottom of pots already; so they have been busy down below from the looks of things.
I hope these 5 gallon pots are big enough for the duration.

Number One is no longer the runt - Number Two now holds the title.
But Two had a wierd color last week before fed after these pics; so it was probably nute variance.
I shouldn't smoke and feed...

Here's the Lineup From Number One to Number Five:
c101-veg-37.jpgc102-veg-37.jpgc103-veg-37.jpgc104-veg-37.jpgc105-veg-37.jpg

These bad boys are hugging the dirt; so after pics I trimmed the lower region of each plant to keep it off soilless medium.
I got another week before I'm scheduled to flip these; so they got their last shot of Rap-id Gro "grow" formula.
Hope I didn't get it too hot.

I caught a clse whiff of one yesterday while trimming, and it sure does have that cheese stank to it.
Didn't want to go rubbing stems right now with all the other action on them yesterday.
I'm kind of a brute with stuff like that; but I will get to it soon.

Got the kids all home and back into the barn:
c1-veg-37b.jpg
Light is 10 to 12 inches from plants.
I'm hoping to induce upward growth a bit for this last week in veg.

WooHoo! So far so good. I vegged for 45 days from the day they popped and then flipped them to bloom.
Number two plant is kinda goofy for nutes for some odd reason - the other four plants like me.

It seems to perk up once fed; but then it goes back to it's old ways in a couple days.
At any rate: the root systems in these appear quite robust and so it's probable that one just wants more than I'm willing to give it.

I am trying to do the same thing to each plant for evaluation.

Here's some shots of the plants at 43 days veg starting with a group photo:
c1-veg-43.jpg

Number One to Number Five:
c101-veg-43.jpgc102-veg-43.jpgc103-veg-43.jpg

And here are the tops I cut off for the FIM's and then shipped to friends for a couple weeks; back home:
c1-veg-43-clones.jpg
Notice how the top to Number two shows more yellowing than the others in the cloner as well.
Odd thing is when I transplanted them it grew the fastest so far.

Okay so as I mentioned above with the last veg images I already flipped to flower cycle 6 days ago.
Here are the plants the morning after waking up in Bloom:
c1-01.jpg

The runt is in the middle.
Here we are at 4 Days Bloom:
c1-04.jpg

And then yesterday after doing some manicure work and feeding them with a shot of N-Cal-Mag to try and deal with runt deficiency:
c1-05.jpg

The stretch is great so far, around 100%.
The main stems are not higher than 6 inches where I FIMed; so everything you see is growth since then.
I have not thought of LST yet; but will get there eventually.

Here are some indiviual shots of the plants from yesterday,

Okay man I will be back in a week or so with a pic of my brush and hopefully some happy healthy plants getting ready to get dusted.

looking great. i bought a pack of rocksters cheese and got a free pack of the cheese #1. i wont be popping them for awhile. have you any ideas yet on males and females?

blogged on 6-24-2012:

I'm back but I am not ready to dust just yet - maybe 4 or 5 more days.
I'm almost ready to isolate male from air circulation, etc.

So after 12 days of Bloom cycle I am done sexing and I ended up with 4 Males and a single Female.
Did some hacking down yesterday and realized I won't be the 'Cheese King' anytime soon:

culledMales.jpgculledClones.jpg

That's Numbers Two, Three, and Four, as well as their coresponding cloned tops above.

When I first realized there was only one Female I was kinda bummed that Number Three was not the Female.
Then I looked again and realized that the Female is the tallest one and I had to LST it down already.
So I need to try and dial in her nute needs as best I can but she does look like she may be a beast:
Female.jpgc101-13s.jpg

The Male I chose is a very nice specimen indeed:
Male.jpgBoyInBox-1.jpg

So I took a shot of the stem size of the Male, and then Female:
MaleStalk.jpgFemaleStalk.jpg

Often stem size is indicative of final yield.
I am 13 days into a 70 to 84 day bloom cycle.

You may have noticed the Male is in a big cardboard box above:

BoyInBox-2.jpg

I forgot to measue it; but I think it's like a 3 feet tall box. It's from a Dryer.
Anyway Mr. Cheese just fits inside without bending his tops over.
He is starting to show some droop on his sacs; so I anticipate pollen dropping natural within 2 to 5 days.

BoyInBox-3.jpgBoyInBox-4.jpg

It's hard to know exactly; but when they droop it usually is not long before at least a few let loose.
I want to selectively pollinate this time; I'll paint a branch of each plant I want to hit once I collect the pollen.

So I stuck a 60 something watt CFL in a sturdy standup fixture strategicaly located to not get the cardboard warm.
Got the box all sandbagged so it won't move anywhere, and got a small piece of cardboard to cover top vent at lights out.
A small grow tent would be ideal for this situation; but I got a cardboard box...

FatMarty

It's been two days since last photos, and things are starting to pick up.

The Boy in the box is growing flowers like crazy and seems content enough in the enclouser.

BoyInBox-5.jpgBoyInBox-6.jpg

I opened up the top of the cardboard to give it some air and stretch room.
Hopeful my circulation is not moving enough air over it to carry pollen around.
I really don't want to do my whole crop in seeds again - I just want some testers of each cross to work out if warranted.

So I'm feeling real good about this Cheese project now that I can see nice plant structure and odor from the pair I am left with after culling.
I can't get a full overhead of the Felae while in the bloom room - it's already too wide and tall to get the shot.
Here's one from the side and another partial of the top:

c101-15s.jpgc101-15o.jpg

It's got two main kolas that are LST down.
Middle is filling in nicely under the 1000 w HID.
I have a couple leafs that are wind-damaged from my aggressive use of circulation air in bloom.
But other than that I am starting to get the nutes dialed in a bit.

I used some N-Cal-Mag last two feedings, and also gave some 'grow' formula nutes last feeding.
My friend has oringinal Exodus Cut clone only of U. K. Cheese.
When I grew it I noticed it grew a paler color almost no matter what I did.
Hope I can figure it out with this one.

While I am impressed with the overall plant structure like node spacing, fan leaf distribution, and bud developement -
what impresses me most might be the main stems - these stems are telling me they want to grow BIG.
The plants are anticipating adding a lot of weight man; they don't need a tenth of their current bulk to support the growth so far.

FatMarty

Okay I'm back with some more photos of the last week or so.

I kinda gave up on the box as the plant did not want to really stay in there,
and I got tired of waiting for pollen to drop.

c1-19.jpgc1-19s.jpg

So I took box off at 19 days bloom cycle and left male outside bloom room.
There is air and fans and shit - I'm hit everywhere again most likely.
This male is going slow release on me and I'm ready to move on in the rest of my grow.

c1-22-f.jpgc1-22m.jpg

The female on left and male on right at 22 days bloom cycle.
The male is pooping several times a day by now.
Female is taking over bloom room; starting to think 5 gallon pot is not big enough.

So yesterday I'm at 25 days bloom cycle and really getting tired of waiting for massive ejaculation from male.
It's 100 fricking degrees and has been for a week. I can't turn air off. Pollen must be flying.

c1-25-z0.jpg

The female is budding all over and getting huge.
It's only 70 days since I planted the seeds.
So I decide to transplant to bigger digs seeing as I still got 7 or 8 weeks of bloom left.
It's Cheese - Both smell like Cheese and look like Cheese and grow like Cheese.

c1-25-z1.jpg

So I layed a couple inches of medium in a 30 gallon...
Grabbed the plant by the base of the stalk and gently lifted her out of old pot.
I drilled a couple dozen 7/16" holes in the lower edge and bottom of container.
Did a little snipping of plastic tabs on lid and converted that to water tray.

c1-25-z2.jpgc1-25-z3.jpg

I used a full 5 gallons of nute mix to throughly soak.
Topped it off with some dry medium to discourage bad stuff and got back in barn.
I had to LST all the extremities of the plant to keep it out of the lights.

FatMarty

Well-Known Member
I did promise to show you my brush.
And I did use it on several branches just to be sure.
But in the end, (today), I just yanked male and shook it over top.
It didn't make the big cloud some do; but there was definately some stuff flying around.

c1-brush.jpgc1-26m.jpg

It was the only Male I had besides it's cloned top; so I'm certain there is only Cheese pollen in the air.
Looks like I'm going to miss my 100 day target for viable seeds by 15 - 20 days.
I added 15 days to the veg period when bloom room didn't empty as fast as expected.
Still - 100 days was probably always too optimistic for a ten week minimum bloom strain.

c1-26f.jpg

So I Hit Fat Marty re-veg, and Cheese #1 Female with the pollen.
Purple Kush would have gotten hit too; so I will grow at least part of that one out another 45 to 50 days for the beans.

So the big male is gone and it's all basic stuff from here.
I will grow the Cheese and the rest to the best of my ability.
With any luck I will have healthy buds full of seeds that are worth exploring further on down the road.

childrenOfTheCheese.jpg

So before flowering I took clones of each cheese.
I took the top of each plant, rooted it in cloner, and planted in #2 pot.
After selection I got rid of 3 culled male clones.
Then I took the top off the original top of both the Cheese keepers and stuck them in cloner.

After 12 days in homemade cloner the roots were robust:

femTopRoots.jpgmaleTopRoots.jpg

Female on left - Male on right.
I'm keeping for myself the female clone I took top off of.
I did a little crude supertopping with my fingers for FIM work, and look forward to growing it out.
I will veg her for the duration of this grow at minimum, and she will be seedless with at least 7 heads when I bloom her.
