The reason Cubas plight is so dour is the USA and the blockade of trade, or sanctions. Cuba would be a beacon of prosperity if the USA allowed it to trade freely. If the USA pulled the sanctions, capitalism would blossom, but the asshole regimes that have been holding it back now point to Cuba and call failure. It's the same mindwash that the US has been foisting on us for years. If we opened up Cuba, you watch, the tourist trade would boom. Christ you wanna see inventiveness and creativity, look at how those guys have kept those 40s and 50s US cars on the road without nary a part from the USA. They Hand make and adapt parts from other vehicles to keep them going. It's so easy to see how you despise communism so much you tear every aspect of the society to peices, what a loser.
So, the greedy capitalistic USA is the sole determiner of Cuba's fate.:mrgreen: How convenient. Can't the Canadians, amongst many many others, go to Cuba unhindered. Yet you rarely, if ever, hear stories about "the great time we had in Cuba!" Why do you think this is Mao. Starts with a C and ends with an O. No, not Conoco, you dunce. He's a Commie.....like you. I think you get the picture.:mrgreen: Yeah right!

In 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton expanded the trade embargo even further by ending the practice of foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies trading with Cuba in dollar amounts totaling more than $700 million a year.

(According to former aide Pierre Salinger, Kennedy asked him to purchase thousands of Cuban cigars for Kennedy's future use immediately before the extended embargo was to come into effect.)

Cuba is not communist, it's socialist, right?
And the reason Cuba is so fucked up is because it's a socialist shithole with a fucked up government. The worlds problems, much to your despair, do not always fall solely in the lap of America.

It's sad to see people like you jump at the chance to blame America for any and everything that is wrong in the world, it really gets old.

Um... Not getting into the debate... but just to clarify-- Almost everyone I know has gone to Cuba for vacation and say it kicks ass. (No offense, but partly because it's not filled with US tourists.)
Great resorts-- way more popular than Mexico etc.
It's a HUGE tourist destination for Canadians. -- Just saying...

To all you rewriters of intent, I say these things:

Abe Lincoln's idea was to free the slaves and give them a better life. In the process he became the father of the Republican party. Mr. Lincoln believed Negroes were people, but would never be part of the real working world. They would always be second class, at best. But, they should not be hated or mistreated.

More or less, I have found these same ideas stated by President US Grant, President Harry Truman, and President Lyndon Johnson. The fact that these men believed the Negroes should not have to live in fear of being lynched, castrated, or raped made them great liberal thinkers. But, in their times they were disliked by many, for these beliefs.

So today, revisionist thinkers want to rewrite history and condemn these men that allowed Negroes out of the cotton patch. These men elevated the Negroes status, to second class. This improved status brings us to today. And today, old black women, can ride in the front of the bus. And young black men, can run for the Presidency.

God bless Abraham Lincoln.

For those who would disparage Lincoln, first do a quick read on Frederick Douglas. I saw a documentary on him, brought me to tears. These are different times, and we would be naive to think we can "put ourselves in their shoes". Revolutionary thinking, after time it seems, often becomes mundane. "I would have thought just like Lincoln because that's the type of person I am." Hogwash.

I didn't say I supported McCain. Actually I said I don't support ANY of the pieces of shit that are running. They are all liars and all of them have their own interests at heart, not Americans.

Debbie O'Hara -- So, Who Was Really Emancipated by Lincoln's Proclamation?

The Truth about Lincoln

It's nearly that time of year again, President's Day, when children in the government schools will be taught about that "Great Emancipator", Republican President Abraham Lincoln. Obviously these schools don't actually have the children read the document or they would know better. I have certainly come to understand that when government schools put a lot of emphasis into extolling a particular person or cause, it is oftentimes a politically correct fairy tale. The truth behind the American Civil War and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation are no exception.
Children today are taught that Lincoln was a champion of equality and that the main cause for the War Between the States was to abolish slavery, but an honest study of history does not support that view. Lincoln in his own words tells us something quite different. On Aug. 21, 1858 in his first debate with Stephen Douglas, on the subject of emancipation Lincoln stated, " Free them, and make them politically and socially our equals? My own feelings will not admit of this… We cannot, then, make them equals." In that same debate Lincoln acknowledged the right of slaveowners to their property and said "when they remind us of their constitutional rights (to own slaves), I acknowledge them, not grudgingly but fully and fairly; and I would give them any legislation for the reclaiming of their fugitives". What Lincoln promised was that he would support the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 which would put the full power of the Federal government behind making sure that slaves would be returned to their owners. Does that sound like someone who was against slavery? Slavery was already dying out in many places and would have most likely died a natural death if the Fugitive Slave Act was simply not enforced.
Could it be that Lincoln changed his mind once he reached the presidency? No way. In his first Inaugural Address he says, " I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." In this speech he again promised to strengthen the Fugitive Slave Law. Notice that Lincoln mentions he does not intend to interfere with slavery IN THE STATES WHERE IT EXISTS. Like most politicians Lincoln talked out of both sides of his mouth, but generally if you heard him speaking out against slavery he was talking about the EXPANSION of slavery into the new territories. He wanted all new territories to be preserves for whites only. If you check it out, you will find that the North had a far more inhumane "Black Code" than the South did. Many Northerners actually feared emancipation because they did not want free Blacks moving up North to live among them.
