OK so I have a 200 watt CFL in a brightwing hanging reflector is a dr100L grow tent that is roughly 3ftx3ftx6ft and I think that my light is frying my plants......

How many inches do I need to have it away from my seedlings. I tried 2-4 inches and it didnt seem hot on my hand and fried 4 seedlings. Moved it up to 6-8inches and fried two more seedlings.

i have read that a CFL taht large can put out as much heat as a HPS system is this true?? Should I have that light 12-14inches away??

Thanks for the help.........smoke tough

Seedlings do not need as much light as mature plants and they burn much easier, I would say 12 to 18 inches away starting at 18 to see if they start stretching

It really depends how hot it gets. Put your hand under it to judge distance. Hold you hand under it and when it doesn't burn or warm your hand its good. Like sorta warm but not hot. It's not really rocket science.

thanks riddle I will try to move them up.....Balzac I hear what you are saying but if you read it all you would have seen that I said it doesnt feel hot to my hands. however I have worked in a restaurant for years. so i bet my hands are pretty tough when it comes to that

I recently made a reflector that fried/dried two of my clones. I wouldn't really worry about getting your light close close while its a sprout but when it has a couple nodes I would say three inches away and i got that measurement from GardenKnome (seemorebuds) and he literally wrote the book on growing haha

You would not put a 200 watt cfl 2 inches from a plant it will burn it

gardenknome was not using a 200 watt cfl in his book

and the hand trick (stupid as it is) does not work for seedlings

honestly you would be way better off getting a flouro shop light for seedlings and once they get going move em to the big light

i have some 42 watt CFLs I am going to use first from now on until they get a couple nodes on them and then through them under that light....thanks riddle you always seem to get my back lol

ahh didn't see the 200 watt part. Keeking it up higher with a reflector and useing smaller clf down lower may work better so you can get some lumes going on.
