Cannabutter - Will This Work?

I found an old stove top coffee percolator the other day. See the attached photo. I was thinking of using it to make canna butter. I was thinking I would look up a recipe. Say it calls for a stick of butter and a 1/3 cup oil. I would put the oil and butter in the bottom of the percolator. Take about an 1/8 of shwag and put it in the top filter part and let it percolate for about 15 minutes.

Would that work? Do I need to pre-heat the weed? Is 15 minutes long enough? Is that enough weed? I liked to be able to make about a dozen cookies or brownies or whatever and feel the effects from each one.

I've tried baking a couple of times before and 'thought I could feel something', but I don't think it was nearly strong enough. I want to duplicate the stories of getting effects off of one cookie and feeling a cumlitive effect with each one after - no ceiling.

No point using that thing. I use my crock pot. I always boil the butter in water and add the herb. Throw in the crock pot, let simmer all day. Throw it all in the fridge, I put it in overnight. The better will get hard on top of the water, and the herb will sink (most of it). Just collect the hardenend butter from the surface of the water, and you have your butter.
You need to use as much herb as you would amount of butter. Calculating is easy. Look on the back of a cake mix or brownie mix box, see how much butter/oil it calls for. Then based on that, and the amount you need to get high, just divide appropriated.
If you use an OZ of herb for your butter, that is generally 40-60 good strong hardcore brownies, so you would need enough butter to accomodate 2-3 boxes of brownies...
Make sense?

Thanks for the help - let me follow up.

I have heard of boiling the butter/herb in water before. The recipe I saw called for straining it afterwords. I thought by using a percolator and not adding water, I'd be able to skip the filtering and separation steps. I could just pour the melted canna butter into the mix and save time and steps. That won't work.

So how much weed is that? You're saying an ounce for 60 brownies. That breaks down to 0.5 grams per brownie - is that about right?

How long do you boil for?

My only concern with you using the percolator with butter is that the element inside there gets really hot. iT WILL PROBABLY GET BUTTER PRETTY DAMNED HOT, AND YOU MAY VAP YOUR THC.
Sorry for the caps...
Yeah. If you get high off of smoking 0.5 gm, then you will get right fucked off of eating that much.
I cook it all day. I'll get it going in the morning, and when I get home, as opposed to smelling dinner, well, yo get the idea.
8-12 hrs is plenty of time, probbly overkill, but works great.

gotcha - so adding water keeps the butter from burning and the temps too high - not sure what the difference in boiling point between butter and water, but OK.

8 to 12 hours - are you boiling for that long or just simmering in the crock pot?

Just simmering on low.

Butter is weird with boiling. It has the ability to reach very very high temps, and cooking oil even higher. Water can't get any hotter than 100, so you stay safe.
My pot on low keeps the temps at about 85-90 celcius, so very close to boiling, but no quite.

Hey mannurse! I am also going to try making cannabutter tonight. My recipe calls for one ounce of herb and says that will make one pound of cannabutter.I got a crock pot. My recipe doesnt mention the adding of water. It says melt butter in crock pot, after skim off foam from top. Let cool. Do this process 3 more times to remove excess moisture from butter.. Then, heat butter up again, add ground up herb, let simmer in butter for 4 hours stirring occasionally. then let cool. Repeat 3 more times simmering herb-butter and then let cool. It then says pour butter mix through strainer and let dry in 1 cup containers... is this recipe incorrect? Im confused...

I finished the butter last night and let it solidify overnight. Cookies baking right now. I will update in the next hour to report on effects - like Christmas morning all over again :)

Should be fine, the water is to prevent the herb from getting too hot. Let us know ow it turns out!

Well, it worked well enough. I forgot to post and didn't remember until late last night and then didn't feel like it :hump::joint:

The process works and I think the next batch I will do with the percolator. It's the quantity of weed is where I am missing the mark. I used 8 grams for a stick of butter to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies. I cooked it in a brownie pan as a single 'cake' because it was a little on the liquidy side. I cut it into 12 pieces so each piece was the equivalent of two cookies. I ate one and then another and started feeling the effects after about an hour. It was total creeper, though. I felt it stronger after two hours than I did after an hour. I ate 5 pieces total (and smoked a little but not much) over the course of about 6 hours and finally feel asleep after the fifth piece.

If I can get the perpetual grow going and have more to spare, I will try it again with about 30 grams.
