Can we have a meaningful discussion about the effectiveness of capitalism?

Bono says capitalism takes more people out of poverty than aid. Agree?
In a recent speech at Georgetown University, the U2 star said, 'Aid is just a stopgap. Commerce [and] entrepreneurial capitalism take more people out of poverty than aid. We need Africa to become an economic powerhouse.' Is he right?

Even one of your own left wing wacky doodles finally came to the conclusion capitalism is the shit, Yea that's right your hero Bono.
If you want to do something to help the worlds poor take fifty bucks out of your pocket and invest it into micro loans, They will take it to a third world country loan it to some poor women and help them start a little business so they can feed their family .
And you will get to see and learn of the progress of their business ,earn a little interest or return on your investment, while you are helping someone who is really poor feed themselves and their family,
Or you can give your money to government they will steal most of the money and the poor will still not be able to feed themselves,
If you are not a liberal when you are 18 you have no heart, if you are still a liberal when you are 40 you have no brain

How does that person or society rise out of poverty if they end up actually earning 6% of what they're making while their boss earns the remaining 93%?

That's interesting, you seem to be saying exactly what I've been saying. Why should I "work my ass off" if my boss gets to keep the majority of my labor?

The same goes for a society that does work hard but doesn't get to keep the wages they've earned

You think your minimum wage job that pays $15/hour yields $250 in earnings for your employer? Or was your 6% comment just hyperbole? You should start a business and see first hand what your cut is.

Capitalism in a Democracy inevitably results in cronyism. Communism inevitably results in the equal distribution of poverty, with the exception of the party bosses. Capitalism is a better system of prosperity for most, and is the superior of the two systems if the goal is equality and fair treatment of citizens.

Your fantasy of a "universal basic income" will only give more power to the political class. What we need is less, much, much less power in the hands of politicians.

Capitalism, great for a few, not so great for the overwhelming majority, and there's the proof

“Government has three primary functions. It should provide for military defense of the nation. It should enforce contracts between individuals. It should protect citizens from crimes against themselves or their property. When government-- in pursuit of good intentions tries to rearrange the economy, legislate morality, or help special interests, the cost come in inefficiency, lack of motivation, and loss of freedom. Government should be a referee, not an active player.

Milton Friedman

If you can draw a straight, downward sloping line then you can see income in communist countries.

When low-skilled Americans compete against low-skilled third worlders, you get the result you illustrated. It's a tough world. Get some skills.

AC,

You might want to vet your news source, lest you look like a foolish tool of the left.

World News Daily Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within worldnewsdailyreport.com are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental, except for all references to politicians and/or celebrities, in which case they are based on real people, but still based almost entirely in fiction. It would seem the data indicates otherwise:

How do you explain the sharp rise in average income beginning at ~1980 for the top .01% of earners? Why were average incomes stable across the board before that?

You're viewing this issue through a specific lense and that feeling it gives you when you see the numbers in black and white makes you uncomfortable. The answers to these questions are pretty clear if you're being intellectually honest. Something happened in the 1970's that shifted the balance of economic growth to the very top percent of households. Now, for whatever reasons you don't want to talk about that and would rather blame "low-skilled Americans".. par for the course with your kind of people I guess, blame the person getting fucked, not the ones doing the fucking..

It's bad enough that the mfkr is still alive. Seriously though I can't tell the difference between right wing news and satire anymore.

Let's start with the money- outlaw all money in politics, point blank. No more campaign contributions, political ads, PACs, lobbying firms, slush money, warchests for smearing and destroying political opponents. That isn't 'socialism', that's 'democracy'.

You see, when all the rules are tilted in favor of the largest, most established companies and industries, what you get is stagnation, not innovation. This is the heart of America's productivity problem, and severing the links between government and industry (does anyone REALLY think that hiring a former- soon to be again- CEO of a major investment bank as the head of a government oversight and enforcement division is anything BUT letting the foxes run the greenhouse?!) are the steps necessary to allow change to happen.

Since it's in the vested interests of those already IN power to keep things as they are, this is much easier discussed than done. It remains necessary.

Capitalism isn't to blame, it's the application of it. When it's allowed to be the rule in business, it works well. When it's allowed into politics is when all hell breaks loose.
