Building a grow room in my garage...need advice please.

Ok, here's the deal:

Due to space constraints, I'm thinking of building a 4x4x6 closet in my garage and insulating the hell out of it. Planning on using a window a/c unit to cool it and venting the exhaust up into the attic.

I guess my question is...would I be better off doing this, or would purchasing a tent and moving it inside when the temp gets too hot be a better option?

Any advice, opinions or lessons learned would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if you are going to need AC to cool with, you should consider a sealed room w/ CO2 otherwise your AC will run almost nonstop as you will be sucking all the cool air out. also your location makes a difference. If your in the Arizona desert, An AC is a must but if your in the northern canadian mountians, heat would be more a concern.

two grow tents would work better you can move them when you want get a 4x4 for bloom and a 4x4 or 3x4 for veg a little more money but a very good setup!!! JB

You are talking about building my exact setup. 5x5x7 room with 1400 watts of hps. I have a window AC to cool the room with and I too vent into the garage. Only problem I've had with it is walking all the way out to the detached garage to work in the garden lol.

I am confused. Why would your tents be outside? Do you mean in the garage as outside? Like MadCow said it all depends on the climate where you are located. Also, if you are going to need an a/c then a tent is a little harder to cool. You'd have to put a portable a/c in there which would take up space or leave it outside the tent and duct it into the tent. If you can it's always better to frame out a space. Probably cheaper, a lot more sturdy too.

Something about building a room makes me feel accomplished ! Also if you were to build a room you could add modification that YOU want.

building a room would actually potentially be cheaper than a tent.
tent can be moved anywhere you please, if ever needed.

i personally started with a tent, and they are great for a while, but after upgrading to a 10x8x8 room, I will never go back.
good news though, my tent is still great for hang drying!

It's 65-75* here daily right now, and for the next few months. Eventually it'll hit 100*, but that's on into the summer a ways.

If I were to build my own room, what would I seal the box with? Some sort of caulk, I would assume.

As far as CO2 goes, I saw Ocali's thread (I think) on building his own room, so I was thinking I could just use his yeast and sugar method...right?

Lol...bummer. So is your room in your garage, or do you just vent the exhaust into your garage?

Also...I was thinking of using either 2 600w lights or 1 1000w. Any thoughts on it? I intend on making my room 4x4x6, so would this be overkill lighting?

Yeah, by all accounts, it seems like it will be FAR cheaper to build my own room than buying a tent, but obviously a tent has the added factor of mobility.

If I DIY a room in my garage, after a few yields I may buy a small tent for a spare bedroom(which should also be free of residence by then) to veg or dry my plants in. Until then though, I haven't quite figured that part out yet.

Another quick question...

Would the size room I'm wanting to build be adequate enough for 6-8 plants?

Also, would a light mover be a wise investment in a 4x4x6 room, or would that be a waste of money?

you wouldnt need one in that small of an area. you should be able to fit that many plants just fine.

they just wont be getting huge or anything
