Buds Smells like Hay!!!

So I harvested a week ago last Sunday and since i have never grown before I was very disappointed that my buds smelled like hay and that maybe i should feed them to the cows and not smoke them.

I am devastated but Bugsrnme said that by putting them in jars for curing will take it out and make them smell like weed. Being brought up on a farm and knowing what hay smells like i find it very hard to believe that i have not just grown some killer hay for the cows.

MOOOOOOOOO :wall:

They are in jars now after a 4 day drying and have started to turn brown but the smell is still there. I flushed and used flora series for the grow harvesting at about 9 1/2 weeks. they are White Widow but have a bitch of a Sativa gene in them causing the longer grow.

Is this normal?? any ideas?

It takes longer man. Up to 3 weeks in the jars sometimes... Seriously. It is all about the waiting. Just keep burping your jars for the first several weeks. The smell.. and taste.. will come in time. Be patient. You grew some dank looking buds btw.:) OH.. and only 4days drying?? As long as the big stems are bendy and the little ones are snappy your good for jars.

I was way disappointed too on my first harvest, until about 3 weeks later.

buds are like a fine wine. the longer they cure the better they smell and taste.
Yep that's what i have been told but over all these years of buying i have never come across weed that smelled like hay before.

Is it possible that all the growers never cut corners sending hay smelling weed into market?

yes. At least the few commercial growers Ive known always dry for about a week and then have them in the jars for at least two. By the time the next cycle is ready to be cut the last one is ready to move. This is Just my experience but I have limited contact with the commercial end of weed.

The buds look good. Did you put em in paper bags for a few days first to help wick some moiture out? After the paper bags you can take em and put em in glass jars that are AIR TIGHT, but burp them a cpl times a day and move the buds around for even drying. You might have to cure for up to a month depending on your conditions. But still I bet you'll get a good high off it even if it smells like hay. Let the cows go without. Or feed it to them then drink the milk.:)

Thanks for the compliment !! This is the one part of this that i never realized was part of the grow. I always thought you just dried and smoked i had never seen raw weed before this. They are in jars now and i will just wait it out.

And i am good on the moisture i have it just right... I think lol

Also, judging by your pic with your hand in it you're handling the bud too much. All those extra trichs on your fingers instead of in your weed. And screen drying really isn't the best way. Try hanging next time.

Your set then man.. its just the final stage that is most difficult IMO..LOL. I will still smoke some freshly dried Hay herb that I grew rather than go out and buy it.

Ive done both screen and hanging. Results are the same. handling buds will not decrease potency either. Most of the THC resins are inside the calyxes. I'm not saying you should rub it all over or anything.. but simple handling isn't gonna do much.

Yes i noticed that the buds dont have that glistening look to them like they should. I have no choice but to screen dry its just the way it is.

Thanks for the feed back

I am not necessarily knocking screen drying altogether, BUT I AM going by what I've read in various magazines on the subject. If you have vast amounts and you're selling them after only drying a little bit that's one thing. If however, they are for your own personal use or you plan on giving them to people you like who smoke then the hang drying is better and worth the extra hassle it takes. Do whatever you wish as long as it makes you happy in the end. Just adding my 2 cents, as over the last 8 months I'd venture to guess I've done a lot more research than you have on this particular subject.:)

25 dollars for a quarter? What do you all consider a quarter? Not a quarter ounce?!! If it is I am really wondering where you live and why it'd be so cheap. Unless you're in Texas and it's Mexican dirt weed I can't imagine any other scenario that fits judging by all the posts I've read around here.
