Recently finished reading Chris Hedges' War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. There was a passage quoted in there from William Manchester's Goodbye Darkness where he viscerally describes his first kill in the Pacific War. Great writing, got me really interested in reading it. Turned out that Manchester is a total fraud and that kind of turned me off that one. Still felt like a good war memoir though.

Settled on George MacDonald Fraser's Quartered Safe Out Here. Pretty damn good book. Very stiff-upper lip, quite politically incorrect, full of that dry wit and deadpan humour, vivid characterization, and an interesting insight into the British soldier's perspective of the Pacific. The writing is quite good as well, often a problem in these types of books, seeing as Fraser was a novelist for many years before writing this one.

Interesting, first time I had heard this about Manchester. I wish the records at Umass and Wesleyan U. were digitized so I could read them myself. I did read the American Spectator article. Have all the other reports/articles originated from the A.S. one? Been a long while since I read any of his books.

Seems they all do come from that article. I would assume they did their research, he still has family around that could sue them. There was quite a lot of questioning of his credibility as a historian and researcher back in the 60s when he wrote about the assassination of JFK, though I suppose that's mostly a separate issue to misrepresenting his service. I suppose this doesn't really diminish the quality of his writing. However, I can't say I'm a fan of passing off half-truths and inventions as non-fiction.

A good read. Helpful in getting to the answers and NOT just what the subject wants to say.

This book is not written from a political view, it is written to help understand the importance of
effective communication.8-)

Sister dropped off Squeeze Me, the new Carl Hiaasen novel this morning. Will make time for this one. It's set in and around a fictional Winter White House in South Florida. I wonder who it could be about?

Mary and Jesus's next oldest brother John started the church after his death. Their vision was that all the Jewish rules (like their food laws, etc,etc) would continue to be in effect. There was a power struggle with the Saul/Paul wing of the church who had far more non Jews and didn't want the food laws and such to throw a wrench in their recruiting. As history shows us, the Saul/Paul folks won. There are/were many texts that didn't make it into the Canon.

I bought the first new book since forever (I like used books normally). Night Sky with Exit Wound by Ocean Vuong. The poems I read so far in it had been amazing. I get so much out of it reading high
