Bonsai mothers and topping... too late?

just looking for feedback and suggestions.

ive got 5 plants approx 12" tall each.a they are currently in veg state under 18/6 lighting. they are about 5 weeks old. they are just barely starting to show preflowers. no alternating nodes yet.

my plan is to have some bonsai mother plants (once ive determined their sex) due to space limitations. i never topped them early on in order to stress them the least amount. i wanted to wait until i know their sex for sure.

so my question is: 1) once ive established their sex (based on developed preflowers), can i top it at that point having not started flowering? the top half and bottom halves have some serious foliage going on. i wanted to basically "top" the top half leaving a good 6" at the base for the mother to shoot out more from the sides. and take the top 6" and use it as a clone. so, 2) can i take a clone from the main stem?

thoughts? thanks

frankly, ive seen peopel top at 1st node, but i hate doing that. just top at 4th node like every other normal human :), put the cutting u make into 12/12 to sex it.

#1 yes you could do that, although some folks do not believe pre flowers exist, but the top is not your best bet for rooting, take a lower branch
