Sexing plants

It's probably been 15 years since I germinated regular seeds and I need some advice.

I want to flip to 12/12 at 5 weeks, determine sex then flip them back to 18/6 until they're tall enough. I top for 8 colas per plant and it takes me 7 or 8 weeks of veg to get to flower size.

Will I risk hermieing my plants? Has anyone done this before or should I just flip the light once and sex them after they've grown to size?

Thanks!

Look into monster cropping, it's basically what you described, and the results are pretty great

Just leave them to veg as normal, and take labelled cuttings off of them to sex in a separate area somewhere. Put the little cuttings into 12/12 light right away. They will still transition to bloom even without roots, so don't worry about waiting around.. just flip them.

That way you don't have to re-veg or mess with the main plants rhythms in any way, and they (hopefully females) can continue to grow as normal so you don't waste time.

I've had plants show gender in veg. I don't measure how long it takes, though.

6 to 8 weeks they usually show sex... sometimes shortened days is the only way to tell with some strains/pheno's

I remember using tin foil around the nodes. Way back in the day. You would have to open and close it off to the light, so just that tiny section gets 12/12, and the rest of the plant would stay in veg with 18+ hrs light. Way easier to take cuts though, and put them all under a small light IMO.
