Pay Pal founder and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel has given $1.25 million to an initiative to create floating libertarian countries in international waters, according to a profile of the billionaire in Details magazine.

Thiel has been a big backer of the Seasteading Institute, which seeks to build sovereign nations on oil rig-like platforms to occupy waters beyond the reach of law-of-the-sea treaties. The idea is for these countries to start from scratch--free from the laws, regulations, and moral codes of any existing place. Details says the experiment would be "a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons."
"There are quite a lot of people who think it's not possible," Thiel said at a

Seasteading Institute Conference in 2009, according to Details. (His first donation was in 2008, for $500,000.) "That's a good thing. We don't need to really worry about those people very much, because since they don't think it's possible they won't take us very seriously. And they will not actually try to stop us until it's too late."

The Seasteading Institute's Patri Friedman says the group plans to launch an office park off the San Francisco coast next year, with the first full-time settlements following seven years later.

Thiel made news earlier this year for putting a portion of his $1.5 billion fortune into an initiative to encourage entrepreneurs to skip college.

Another Silicon Valley titan, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced in June that he would be funding the "Clock of the Long Now." The clock is designed to keep ticking for 10,000 years, and will be built in a mountain in west Texas.

I looks like an extension of an idea of self sustained communities. Like the ultimate self sustained community.

You gotta remember crazy ideas turn out to be the best.

Does anybody want this to be true or do you quite like waiting in traffic in big cities and blaming the other dude for stuff lol

i think it's great.

get all these retards to realize what it is they'll be doing.

the billionaires will form floating countries free from all laws. then they will draw in the idiots who'll think it's a utopia.

since there are no laws the poor fools who expect paradise will be herded into servitude. women will be used as cows, breeding an eternal supply of slave labor, while the rich, will just hire the types of idiots who do well on the offensive line against blitz defenses, give them the most powerful weapons on this planet, and FORCE you to do as you wish.

you think this is tyranny. you don't know what's waiting for you on that fucking island.....

to me, it comes off as only the wealthy could live there, the laws are wacky, not to mention where the fuck are you gonna get resources, its in the middle of the goddamn ocean, desalination costs soo much money, where are you going to get fresh water and food?
the prices would be sky high, and with no regulatory laws, they wont limit how much someone can charge for food, water, electricity, homes, etc... and with no minimum wage, people would be paid whatever the employer chose to pay them, which would be very inconsistant to the price of the aforementioned commodities.

its a good idea for the people who say the govt has gone to shit, etc... while in reality its implausible.

well there will be laws, i didnt mean there would be no laws. just laws chosen by the owners I suppose they will make a constitution

laws are beneficial to society... the laws chosen by the owners will benefit them, not those who come to work for them on the island. it's a can of worms that shouldnt be opened.

will they allow abortion? legalize weed? Stuff like that, which is controverisial in the us, will they pass it? This will end up being either an island of anarchy, or a totalitarian island

well there will be like hundreds of investors i think so they all would agree on basic laws somehow. if somone didnt like the laws, they shouldnt go to the island or invest in it

I wonder what they would do about defense, what if pirates attack and steal all thier shit

what if you were born on it, that would suck, your only home nation is a hunk of metal in the middle of the ocean, and then if it sinks, you dont even got a birth country anymore lol

well if they put it in a place that gets lots of rain they can collect the rain,

its like the same way they have a cruise ships supplied for a long cruise trip. they would ship container loads of stuff to the place just like any other country or island

Okay Urca before I answer any of those, you know I could change the term ocean to space and repeat that straight out minus the desalination part. It all starts off being a crazy idea for the wealthy.

What resources are we talking about? Food, check. Water, check. Electricity, check. Plastic/Metal cutlery, check. Toilet paper, you gotta wash your arse....

So what other resources? Plus nobody said all these islands can`t be supplied with long lasting resources until further methods are developed.

Jeez urca you need a few science lectures. Ever heard of Anerobic digesters for sewage? Windmills? Solar panels? Reverse osmosis filters?

What trash, can`t you imagine a life without it? =D

And you grow all the food, this is up to the engineers seriously...

Aren`t we thinking of doing this shit in space, I mean like Star Wars?? Your having a good go at this idea while everybodys fantasy part is fixated to floating around in a fucking vaccuum LOL

i think living in space is dumb as shit too... here's a thought. give condoms to places like india, africa, enforce the use of such, work to change laws in developed countries... bam problem solved, no dumb fuck islands floating around
