"If the sentimentalists were right, hunting would develop in men a cruelty of character. But I have found that it inculcates patience, demands discipline and iron nerve, and develops a serenity of spirit that makes for long life and long love of life. And it is my fixed conviction that if a parent can give his children a passionate and wholesome devotion to the outdoors, the fact that he cannot leave each of them a fortune does not really matter so much. They will always enjoy life in its nobler aspects without money and without price. They will worship the Creator in his mighty works. And because they know and love the natural world, they will always feel at home in the wide, sweet habitations of the Ancient Mother."

300 pounds is a decent live weight for a black bear around me. Just the cape weighing that much is nuts. Always wanted to hunt a Kodiak bear, one of my dream hunts for sure. You're a lucky guy.

Alaska F&G guesstimated him @ 1400 lbs based on measurements (it took 3 of us just to roll him over).
Note the size and color of the claws - large and whiter the better, indicates a very mature animal and he easily made Boone & Crockett.
Hide squared 10' 6" - skull scored low 29". Hunter had a full body mount done on him for his trophy room.

He dropped a 6K tip on the dining room table when he left.
To say he was tickled is an understatement.

What an absolute giant! The cost of these travelling big game hunts means I'll be sticking to my Whitetail deer, turkey and black bear. The licenses, fees and cost of doing a proper mount are out of reach for a lot of hunters but I love to see the pictures and hear good stories. Their claws are a good bit flatter than black bear. They're bigger but they don't hook like a black bear. It would be cool to harvest one but until then keep posting killer pics like these for those of us that can only dream.
