Back-yard dirt

just buy a pot with the right soil and nutrients and you will be way better off. its not expensive and easy. plus you can move it around if you need to.

I'm going to bring this to the table:
I've had really good experience with seedlings by mixing ROSE PETALS into the soil, which consists of some good clay I got from my in-laws farm, vermiculite, and Good Seed starting soil. I get a 1 cup glass, fill the bottom inch with fresh petals, and put the soil mix on top, then pop in a seed. Every time I've done this, the plant goes APESHIT, and develops a good, dense root structure.
Has anyone else tried this?
Also, I'm beginning to compost using trimmings from my Banana plant and pineapple cuttings.

Give it a shot, all as I have is a bucket filled to about three qurters full of soil then topped up with all purpose compost, I feed once a week with tomato feed.

Your right, NoDrama, a bigger pot would be better however I have to move the plant when the mother-in-law pops round or we get visitors so portability is important (it only just fits in to my garden shed).

Can you give me any advice for 'yellowing leaves'. If you look at the attached pic you should be able to see what I mean

The plants are Durban Poison. I chose DP becuase I was going to try Gorilla gardening but I got attached and couldn't plant them out.

I was wondering wether I should try to induce budding now as I beleive the flowering time is around 8/9 weeks and being in a Northern town in the UK we won't get much sun in October (we don't get much sun in the Summer let alone Autumn).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

get some mushroom compost from nursery somewhere, bat guanno, peat brick,lime,blood meal and a tiller and till it 18" deep untill that shit is mixed not fine as sand, but smaller than golf balls, and sit back and watch em grow

so i have also herd that miracle grow has a low ph but if you are using fertilizer wont that fuck with the ph what i am saying is if i have my soil set at around 6.5 or so if i am using fertilizer wont that increase the ph and possibly sent my plants into shock usually what i use is the 2nd to lightest soil i can find and at that the cheapest add in some vermiculite and check my ph if it is low i and some lime to get my ph to read about 6 to 6.8 or so but this will be my first year using fertilizer what should i use i normally just let them go and have had some good crops but i am looking for better than good can anyone help me out on that i have herd that advanced nutrients makes the best but its very expensive and i am kinda in a drought if you know what i am saying

I tried using my backyard soil too, and i live in wisconsin and we have good soil. I wouldn't use it because of ants and other insects. If you did use it i would make sure to add add killer or insect killer so the bugs dont eat your plant.

Ok heres my 'Q' i used the dirt 4rm my apt. garden wen i collected it the top was ok, moist but i dug 1 inch from the top used that as a soil base for my plants i have 5 seeds germed them instantly in a day all the seeds were like 1inch (1 1/2 inch) if guessed. My growing spot is my closet its perfict it shadowy and stays cool in any heat outside. i used 2 clear blue cups might be between 5 1/2 inch-to 6 inch for my starter pot. My growin box is a wooden box approximately 11 to 14 inch an a really long width maybe 23inch across.Next im sorry if this is long but its my first time growin thx to my MJ CARD, now the box opens from the top i placed the lamp on the top covered the box with the top, but the box wont close because the lamp is to long to theirs about a 2inch opening gap. I covered the extra light with alot of my clothes but left some areas with an opening with air flow and the box has 2 round holes and 2 holes so u can carry the box. i left the 2 closet doors open half way from each side. done now can some one plz plz plzzz tell me if im doing sumthin wrong. but mainly need help on the soil part thx to whoever reads this nd answers me bacc...peace

beware of some of your dirt with a higher clay content, some of the people out here will water their inground plant 5 times through veg and less for flowering, they all mix good soil to dirt and i beleive it stays wet for way too long, not that they are actually overwatering. i use foxfarm ocean forest 2 bags to light warrior 1 bag.

don't use back yard dirt. It will cost you more in the long runa nd stink your house up something horrible when you bake it. Soil isn't that expensive.

I mixed some potting soil (not MG) and bone meal, pearlite (a good amount as I tend to water often) some humus and worm castings.

i knew a guy who did this didnt clean it or anything and it died this guy had absolutley know idea what he was doing lol

isnt it easier to buy compost and use perlite and vermiculite.

I live in missouri and there are some corn fields that they fertilize once a year. Would it be safe to use that soil?

i straight up got back yaed soil, some potting soil, grass, leaves, egg shells,orange pells, lime juice, um..and some over random soil around my house. got a stick stired it and shuck the hell outt of it and then poored it in the soil where im gonna plant water it and mix it up again. works for me =)

I am originally from Iowa and come from a family of farmers, so I know what you mean, and even-though the EPA has gotten more strict on what the farmers can put in their fields, there is ALL KINDS of crap in those fields. Remember they are growing for fuel and animals that eat anything. Would you eat something that come out of that field? There is rusty nails and all kinds of crap in those fields.

If you insist on using it, get a probe that measures Ph, and check the calcium, Magnesium and other levels. MUCH easier, and safer to buy bag soil specifically for canni plants. I do know that area and there is a LOT of clay in the fields there. Same type of stuff I used. Worst prob was GIANT drainage issues. Stuff turns to concrete whenever it gets wet with nowhere to go.

How do I succesfully transplant newly germinated seeds into outdoor garden?

I'm using back yard dirt, miracle gro, and bagseed as an experiment and these plants are looking AWESOME!!! and the dirt was bad too. it had glass and rocks and trash in it but its working well in pots indoors under 6500K and 3000K CFLs producing a total of about 12000 lumens. This is getting interesting...

Used some backyard from my shit. Besides some heat stress its fine. Even though its a boy (i am pretty sure.) Anyone that tells you not to do it this way hasnt tried it. I find it a challenge to pick some shit outta my yard even though people tell me it is stupid wont work etc. Do what you gotta man. Add some shit for aeration tho. Sometimes soil can get really compact...

Pure sand without adding other amendments would be like a hydro growth medium, so technically yes you could, but would need liquid nutrients circulating...
