I can not give you watt or btu #'s but I can tell you for a fact that a 1000W Air cooled hps with the ballast mounter outside the grow space contributes less heat to the grow area than my 465W Inda-gro with pontoon.
Until there are air cooled led's commercially available Air cooled hps wins the heat debate all day in my opinion.
The only people who need a/c are those who live in areas where outside temps rise to levels above desirable or co2 implementation is used. Otherwise an air cooled hood and proper air flow get it done.
...at smaller scales. As soon as things get big, everything changes.

I alluded to cooling LED better above. I think I have an answer and I'm assembling a prototype... Cuz I LIVE for this shit! LOL

Oh I totally agree with bare bulb vert that was my choice. I'm not sure you've seen my light though. It doesn't use a reflector per say.

Of course you do know I'm still including AC usage in my setup. Im interested in what you have going on. If it's liquid cooling good idea as well. In my ideal setup it would still be a closed system with CO2 infusion

Sealed room controlled environment agriculture is the future and the eventual norm. Air extraction cooling doesn't conform to this standard, but other methods can.

I live in natzi land so I will probably never post pics. I can tell you this I ran a 400 quartz mh overhead and 4 600 plantmax at the 4 corners of a 7x7x10 room I flip flopped the 600s and ran 2 at a time on one giant tree. Last one was 7.5' tall and 6.5' wide. Yield was just shy of 3 potatoes. Not to shabby for a 20 gallon hempy grow.

that's dumb, (your comment not you). unless your unable to provide fresh air input at a reasonable temp, leds provide substantially lower "heat" input to the grow space making air cooling leds like an hps not necessary and in fact a plain waste.

summer being finished in the PNW, my grow rooms are already running lower than I prefer, and the leds saved my ass during the strangely hot summer we had this season.

Well yes of course I'm saying fresh air from outside of grow environment through lighting and back outside of growing environment. I guess you got that though lol.

I would agree but say for instance in the new kid on the block Nevada. Every btu counts there I'm sure. Also for small scale tent growers I believe my idea could help get high intensity into a small area and still be manageable. Yes at really high efficiency situations air cooling wouldn't be viable but that is still pretty cost prohibitive currently. Also I imagine with air cooled you could always bring the heat to the canopy/root zone if need be easily enough by moving some ducting. I guess everyone had there ideal fixture that it's what makes the world great.

What's retarded (your comment not you) is you clearly overlooked the fact I included outside temps being reasonable.
Led's saved your ass lol
With a dedicated cooling duct weather it be for an hps lamp or the led fixtures I can see coming in the near future you can vary the airflow for the light heat exhaust and have control of how much of that heat you are allowing to remain in the grow space.
It is funny how large room or commercial operations keep getting drug into these arguments. Let's face it, the majority of led users are still in the closet or a tent.
Being able to duct the heat out of those small spaces is a huge plus

1000W HPS will contribute 1000W of heat and 465W Inda-gro will contribute 465W of heat (plus the heat lost in the ballasts). You can't break the laws of thermo no matter how much you think you can.

This is true but if you can trap part of that heat and remove it before it enters the grow environment it will lead to less load on your HVAC system.
Trapping part of it and removing it is the V part of HVAC (ventilation).

(to be clear, I was responding to onehitdone who made the claim that a 1000W lamp HPS generates less heat than his indagrow that dissipates half as much power. 1000W is more than twice as much power than 465W and thus generates more than twice as much heat)
