DIY Cob Advice??

Hey guys,
I have a grow going now using only a small UFO LED here. I have been planning to upgrade the lighting to something new for some time now. My girl is about 2 weeks or so away from flowering. I can't decide on what to purchase so I began to look at all the options. I discovered COB led's and was easily convinced that it is the way to go. I am a total DIY person so I started watching some build videos and setups.

The light will be made to fit a 32"x32"x63" tent. I want to keep the build simple and neat. I also want to start small and see how it goes. If I get good results, I am most likely going to upgrade and add more cobs.

To start, I have a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me out with...
- What happens if your driver has an output voltage far greater than your COB array? For example, your COB's have a total voltage of 240v and your driver has an output voltage of 350v?
- Is it possible to power fans and or other equipment from the COB driver?
- Are reflectors that necessary? The heat sink active cooling fans I am looking at don't have enough space to install the mounts for the COB's and reflectors. I will be using either adhesive or thermal paste to place the chip onto the heat sink. Here's a link for the fan.
- I've seen builds where people add UV lights or add red LED's to their existing cob. I want my girls to get a full spectrum! If I can add stuff like this, Is it possible to be powered from the same driver as the COB's?

I've read that Kingbrite on Alibaba is a legit Cree seller. Can anybody attest to that? Also, what are his shipping times like?

Here is the setup I am thinking...Please let me know your thoughts and if you feel I should add lights or use different equipment. I am totally new to this and open to suggestions.

- (4) CXB3590 3500k 36v CD COB's
- (4) Arctic 11 GT cooling fans
- (1) Meanwell HLG185-1400a
- (1) 10k potentiometer for Dimming
- H frame made from aluminum strips
- I still need to source out all the wires, cables and power switches but these are the main components I am thinking.

Sorry for making this so long, I am just trying to be as detailed as possible! Please let me know your thoughts on my setup or if you have any recommendations that could help.

Voltage depends on CV or CC constant voltage constant current

most drivers ran in series for cobs use CC, so current is the most important voltage will move up or down with heat, so have more volts is no big deal.....diodes will only use the voltage they need according to the current in CC....

I would go Vero 29 V7 with 68.4 volt version [C]

The arctics are fine but if you don't have experience, the only reason we started using these types of sinks, is because There weren't any LED specific sinks for COB at the time.....

Robincnn has sinks
Cobkits has sinks
Cdiweb has sinks

That's where I would look 1st.....everything else on the parts list, looks ok.....but it was a fast scan....just to get this going for you...:peace:

Please bear in mind if going Vero29C at 1400ma you will be at nearly 100 watts so please make sure your heatsink selection takes this into account.
Re Driver and voltage, the thing you need to consider is the the upper and lower Output levels, ie
''For example, your COB's have a total voltage of 240v and your driver has an output voltage of 350v?'' what is the min voltage the driver offers, because you clearly have enough max voltage
Cheers

I have successfully received cobs and holders, lenses, and reflectors from KingBrite in dealing with Jerry.
jl@kingbrite.cn is his email. He will respond quickly.

Shipping to USA was 5 days.

But I reccomend one of the for mentioned companies.
Am I looking at the Alibaba pricing wrong? I mean it states I can buy 4 clu048 1818c4 from kingbrite for around $2? even if shipping is $50 it seems too good to be true.

Write them and the CLU is around 35$. But they can write you low cost on the package to deal with taxes and clo :)

Thank you Tomula, I'm not familiar with ordering from Alibaba. I picked up a Timber light it looks and works great. I want to try my hand at making something similar to double up in my tent. However, if I'd only save a couple of bucks than I'd probably just order another from dan.

Well it's only way for me to get decent priced COBs but if you got other way with warranty even, go for it!

Looks good you can pick from a few locals for parts in kit form from @REALSTYLES or @Growmau5 or plc timber or cutter and cobkits
