heres my problem......i am 7 weeks into the grow living in costa rica . about 2 weeks ago i lost all power to my grow room for 5 or 6 hours , then all of the sudden the power reappeared .........what a relief !!!!!! they wire things differently here.....this 20 amp breaker has 8 electrical outlets which covers 4 rooms....the grow room has one 400 watt hps bulb and two 60 watt cfls , along with oscilating fan and an ozone genator 1000 sq ft type , nothing is pluged into the bathroom or the laundry room and the kitchen only the frig. is plugged in all this on a 20 amp breaker . now getting to the problem yesterday at 3 am in the morning all power stopped again and now its been about 18 hours and still no power . by the way the breaker has never tripped and there are no gfi reset buttons..........help me please my crop is only 30 days from harvest and looks tasty all ready .....hiring an electrican at this point would only be very stupid and most certainly cause me years of jail time ...can anyone help me ??????? please

Is the problem in that room only or the entire house? Did you pay your electric bill yet, lol.. Sounds like (if power outage is in that room) god hates you.. or if its the entire house and other houses on the block maybe.. just maybe there doing constrution work and have to cut the power.. i dont know but maybe its possible your power company has a limit for you and just cuts power at a certain limit?

the problem is only for the outlets that the breaker is controlling . there is power to all the lights in the entire house and power to the outlets in the master bedroom and the living room

Sounds like the breaker might have went bad. Go buy another one for 10 bucks. Make sure you get the same amp as the old one. =)

They are very easy to install (4-6 screws and 2 wires). Just BE SURE SURE SURE SURE SURE SURE to turn off the main power before you install it (you dont want any power running through that box).

Actually, make sure your an adult and have some common sense before you attempt to install it, its very easy, but if your a dumbass, you can kill yourself (not saying you are at all bro, I just dont wanna get ya killed) =)

You can also google installing a new breaker if you'd like, for more information.

Cheers,

I'm not a master electrician, I know some one posted here that is and there are a few around (Al B comes to mind) that will give you all the facts. Until then here goes. The reason that 20 amp breaker can power those 8 outlets in four rooms is you don't have all of them drawing that much power at the same time. It sound to me like the problem your having is your main service can't handle the load. I had 60 amp service, common years ago. Code requires more than that most places now. The sixty worked fine with the air conditioner on, and the electric dryer running, especially after I changed the stove from electric to natural gas, but don't turn on the microwave while the air conditioner and dryer are running along with the three computers etc. etc.
I upgraded mine to 200 amp service and haven't had a problem since. This does require an outside visit from the power company and will probably reqiure an electrician inside. If you check and find your service is less than 100 amp (150 amp if your gonna grow) you should have it upgraded anyway. I spent a few thousand on the project including the new panel and breakers, wiring etc. but I always overdo electric circuits. In any case you should have a dedicated circuit to run your lights, maybe you do have and I missed that. VV

thanks man !!!!! its amazing how simple things seem to be when one isnt stoned .......i changed the breaker this morning and all is good thanks again ......well at least everything is working again ,however when i went outside to turn off the main breaker........which looked like something from the 1940's i noticed that one of the two wires supplying the house was all burnt up and almost cut into....do you think i should call the electric company here in costa rica to repair and if so do you think they will want inside my house to check out my breaker panel which is also located in my grow room.thanks again

after reading your words of wisdom , i went out side for further investagation and noticed that i only have a 100 amp service and from the meter to the main shut out switch which is only 6 inches there are two wires and one of them are burnt , rusted and almost cut in half ......does that mean i only have 50 amps going to the house ? i live in costa rica no stove , no a/c , no washer or dryer , no hot water heater no nada .......i know how this sounds ....lol....lol...but i live like a tico ...anyway inside there are two 40 amp breakers one of which is a double pull breaker which i believe is for the stove i dont have and the other maybe for the septic tank but not sure....there is also a 15 amp breaker that contols 8 overhead lights only and a two 20 amp breakers which control 16 electrical outlets , 8 outlets each .so in conclusion there are breakers inside for 135 amps and only a 100 amp feed with one wire thats all burnt up between the meter and the main shut off . need less to say i am freaking moving in 6 weeks after this grow . should i call the power company here because of the burnt wire out side and do you think the power company or the owners will want to come inside for further investigation ??????? because the breaker panel is in my grow room and i dont want to cause any suspician ..........thanks again

While I am FAR from an expert.

It sounds like an old wire that has been put through more amp's/spikes then it could handle through the years.

That was most likely what caused your breaker to die to begin with. Heck, maybe it was caused from overload the service when you put up your lights etc?

Try to adjust the time your big HPS turn on, so its in the middle of the night when usage is it a minimum.

Gluck man!

Just make sure the following.

A) your using a big enough breaker..
B) your wiring can actually handle the amps..
C) you pay your bill
D) its not a power outage for the whole block
