Are leds a lot cooler than hps?

If you have a limited budget look at kingbrite, lots of Rui members use them myself included, I got 2x240w samsung boards 301h + ir with meanwell drivers for £254 delivered UK, there's a same spec thinner heat sink available version they're around £20 cheaper, kingbrite accept PayPal.

Remember to allow for import duty!

On my last run I had a combination of HPS and MH. I have since switched over to LED’s, and it is dramatically cooler in my room. I was having to bring in an outside filtered air vent (as in outside of the house) just to keep the room cool enough. And I was pushing into the 80s.

I switched over to a Mars Hydro TSW 2000 and TS 3000 light and I’ve eliminated the outside air. My room maxes out at 73.5° now.

If you have the means to switch over to LEDs, I highly recommend it. Below are two pictures from my grows.

The first pic was week 9 with HPS/MH lights (and a blue filter on the lens) the second is my current crop (7 weeks) under full spectrum LED. Both are great.

I like the results with MH/HPS, but I hated battling the heat and it caused one of my plants to flip. The benefits of LED just outweigh the older lights.

Damn nice looking plants. Is that coco or soil?
Yeah the missing heat would be great for summer months. But quality of weed is also very important, and I would not like to switch for anything inferior to gavita 1kw. I could find very little info on this. Some lab test say that led grown has more thc and cannabinoids and terpenes, but some big grower in USA said the bud quality isn't there yet with LEDs.

The potency of the smoke or the structure of bud? I find there is something missing in the smoke of LED .

Thanks man, I’m growing in Coco. It’s basically the way to go if you want to eliminate the guess work of watering soil properly. Just my preference though.

I can say that I have had some great growth with the HPS/MH combo with regard to bud density and size, but I think that the full spectrum light from the LED is giving me much frostier and aromatic buds.

The HPS/MH can crank out micromoles, but for smaller grows it’s like using a sledge hammer to set a finish nail. My HPS could put out 2400 micromoles, but my plants only need 900. Anything more and you raise the likelihood of flipping your plant to herm or foxtail due to light stress. LEDs like the TSW2000 give more than enough photons per watt and at least than half the cost to operate.

This is my first run with all LEDs (last time I mixed LED and HPS for the last half of my bloom phase to drop temps), so I don’t know yet if the quality of the smoke is going to superior. I suspect it will be only because my bud density and formation is nice and consistent from the bottom to top of the cola, they are a lot more fragrant, and they are packing more trichomes than my last run with the same strains. They are super frosty and I have to wear gloves to even water them so I don’t smell like mj at work all day.

That said, I’ll have to report back potency in February after harvest/dry/cure.

the mars hydro tsl2000 is only 300w so it’d be half as much heat total. This isn’t really taking into account that leds don’t radiate heat down the way hids do, it all goes to the heatsink which radiates it upwards.

potency, not necessarily only thc, but other cannabinoids and terpenes

mm sounds good. I have seen some others comment same, that buds seem frostier under leds. But I want to see lab results to be 100% sure :D

It's weird to read these threads and get a sense that people's problem is not enough heat. I have to make a grow tent work through an Arizona summer, when a stretch of cool days will be 110°F. So at best, with the AC at full tilt, chilly houses might be in the high 70s.

I had to give up growing because of this, I just couldn't afford to air condition and ventilate an HPS grow tent. We're talking easily $500+ electric bills and dispensary weed was abundant and cheap, so it just made no sense at all to continue.

I'm hoping -- desperately hoping -- that a 2x4 in a laundry room with a Spider 2000 or a Mars or whatever will not give me the same grief.

I run both gavita de hps and the new gavita 1930e. The leds are a bit cooler but still put off decent amount of heat. They are roughly 800 watts. My Par meter says they are much brighter. Yield is similar, so far quality is slightly better under hps, but I hunted all these under HPS and have way more experience running them so hopefully it will get better over time as I figure them out more. I dunno maybe I ran too hot last time, a lot of people recommended 84 degrees but I ended up with a lot of foxtailing to the point some strains went in hash bin, so my overall yield was actually way down for that run, even though the plants that did turn out nice yielded more overall than normal.

i have a couple questions maby somebody could answer these for me since im still on the fence and haven't bought leds yet.

are 650 watt led fixtures with the meanwell driver directly ontop of the fixture cooler than say 600 watt hps with an air cooled hood with the ballast located outside of the grow room?

also, why are led fixtures not setup to have the meanwell driver located in another room where your flipbox is located?

a 650W draw LED will put in the exact same BTU as a 600W HPS bulb.

how ever the heat from an LED stays up above the light (mostly). LEDs lack the radiant heat that HPS bulbs have. So it's usually easier to cool if you stick an extractor fan above the fixture it will kill a good portion of the heat from the light. Same trick does not work the same with HPS.

as far as moving LED drivers out of the room. You can do this. But you just have to be careful with the size and length of the wire. Too long and it could make enough voltage drop that boards won't light up.

for example if you are using a 48V LED and the driver only provides 48V. Then adding 10Ft+ of cable could diminish the voltage enough to cause problems lighting the LEDs.
